Meet Tazhe Johnson of Splashy Stylez Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tazhe Johnson.

Hi Tazhe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am known as ‘Splashy’ in Pittsburgh, PA. Growing up, I would braid all my cheer sister’s hair during Homewood Bulldawg’s Football Little League for years. As I got older, I did the Cosmetology Program as I was in High School, which made me a young, hustling, passionate, and very talented hair stylist who already had a very steady clientele by the age of 17. Once I started undergrad at The first Degree-granting, Historical Black College University, The Lincoln University, my hairstyles just started to progress. But I had to start over. I didn’t know anyone, I had to grind my way back to being a top stylist in my community, it was like a culture shock. I started off just doing my own box braids and sew in’s, to doing my fellow classmates hair, styling Residential Leaders quick weaves, being requested by the Dean of the University. I knew at that moment being a hairstylist was for me.

After I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology in 2019, I knew I was leaving campus and going back home, where my steady clientele was still waiting for me. I launched my business, “Splashy Stylez Co.” January 2020. I started off just doing braids, sew in’s quick weaves, etc. Then I took a leap of faith and started a “Splashy Collection” selling eyelashes, Carbon Combs, 100% Virgin Hair, Wigs, Silk Serums, my “6 Figure Vendor Book’ and hosting Braiding Courses, where I teach my special techniques to help other style hair as great as me. Thanks to my community and the tremendous support I receive in the city, I opened up my first Hair Salon “The Splash House”, where celebrities, people of prestige and purpose come to get transformed.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all, but no one said it would be easy. As my business grew on campus, so did my paper lengths. I spent four years of multiple 20-page papers. As a full-time student, who maintained a 3.0+ through the whole time, I thought that that was the hardest time of my business. Until I got home and invested thousands of dollars in my business doing hair and marketing classes, purchasing inventory, just to get hit with one of the biggest pandemics of our lives, which caused me to lose clientele… Feeling like all my hard work just went to waste. Continuously posting on social media, not getting a like, let alone a sale.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What does success mean to you?
I define success as the outcome you get from your accomplishments. Once you put your mind to something, only you can succeed in completing that goal. All success isn’t good, but you got to take the bad with it in order to know how to make It right.
