Today we’d like to introduce you to Terence “Drew” Davis.
Terence, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I knew from high school that when I got to college that I wanted to do something fun and hands-on. Lol, I did not want to have to write a ton of papers or read tons of books, I want to CREATE! I started at Clark Atlanta University with a Mass Communication major because I was still unsure of what aspects of the arts I wanted to fall into. I dabbled in radio, news broadcast, and many more but once I got behind a camera I FELL IN LOVE.
One of my good friends already had a head start in film because she was older. She was the first person I shadowed as far as video editing and she also allowed me to assist her on her shoots. I worked on my craft and shadowed as much as I COULD AND EVENTUALLY TRANSFERRED to Georgia State University to pursue a degree in Film/TV with a minor in theatre. With this, I got tons of experience in front and behind the camera.
During this time, I landed my first job in film working for a production company specializing in documentaries and short films. I initially was just doing paperwork and helping out around the office until I learned the company and system enough to start editing. This is a pivotal moment in my career in film. I worked here for a little over four years, progressively turning from just editing, to filming and editing, to filming -editing and updating the website, to filming- editing and updating the website, booking actors and locations and eventually it seemed like I was running the entire company.
This is what inspired me and gave me the confidence that I could start my own business and make much more money for myself. I wanted to get much more creative because the work in the short films had become redundant. So finally in around 2015 I created my company DrewVisions Productions. It was a rocky start and I was unsure if I made the right or wrong choice by leaving the company and starting my own business. Things started off slow and I wasn’t getting those weekly checks like I had been used to, but no storm last forever. After tons of free jobs and networking, and selling myself short, I’m finally to a place where Im booked and busy – working for some of the hugest celebrities, hairstylists, makeup artists, dancers, and a slew of tons of other creatives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing that comes easy is worth having. I struggled with learning the aspect of running a business on my own with no help at all from anyone. Money would be short and sometimes finding clients who would be willing to pay my price without begging for free jobs or discounts. Understanding my worth and not cutting my self short was a big struggle and differentiating between a good opportunity and just doing free work that has no benefit. But now, I’m comfortable enough in my craft that I get what I’m worth and more! People appreciate my craft and my time and my portfolio of worth reminds that my price is worth every penny you’ll pay. Also finding help sometimes because the workload is just too much. Shooting is quick and easy but editing depending on the project still can take days. I am still working on growing and getting interns and eventually opening a huge studio here in Atlanta.
DrewVisions Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
DrewVisions Productions is a film production company that specializes in video filming and editing. I’m known for creating visually captivating videos that catch the eye and promote and market your brand in ways that photographer and other videographers can’t. My videos are tasteful, elegant, and fun – leaving the overall vision of any project up to the client. Outside of filming and editing, I dabble in photography as well but my videography skills, as well editing is what sets me apart the most. I also do photoshop, DVD creating, web design, and pretty much all things media. The way I tell a story in my edits is why people love me and my company. Everybody can have a camera but everyone has a different eye and when it comes to editing, everyone’s style is difference. I can’t say what really sets me apart but then that I am just me. That was makes me different. I know what the clients like and I work with them to make sure their final product is exactly what they envisioned when they came to me with their project. I am most proud of doing this all on my own and building a high-end clientele that respects my craft and time and can see my dedication and passion as it reflects in my work.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every moment is one I cherish. Every video I create is part of my story and my journey and are all stepping downs to where I am today. No matter how big or little the job, or how famous or unknown my client is, I appreciate the business and I make it a experience that I grow from. Moments that ground me, and I reflect on with a smile, and encourage me when I get discouraged about my work are clients like Beyonce’s personal Make Up Artist Sir John, Dancer and owner of ABCD Anthony Burrell – hair moguls like Alonzo Arnold and Cliff Vmir who I pitched a reel to BET for which landed him his own digital series once of the first on the network. I’ve worked doing BTS for Lifetime’s American Beauty Star Season 2 which was super fun. I’ve also worked at New York Fashion Week, with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and with celebrities like Toni Braxton, K Michelle, K Camp, Shaun T, Amiyah Scott, and a hosts of local artists and entrepreneurs. The constant outreach of love and people wanting to work with me keeps me inspire and wanting to create and grow in my craft. I just want to make my city proud and be a significant part of the film produced here and single videographers that ring a bell when you think of Atlanta.
