Meet Thomas Dortch III of T.W.D. in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Dortch III.

Thomas, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began working with my father in high school, where I learned the ins and outs of the business. I caught on quickly and I was able to consult for and create businesses in high school and in college. After graduating from Florida A&M University, I became Vice President and part-owner of the consulting firm. With a few more years under my belt, I began creating subsidiaries, as well as creating more start-ups for several associates I gained along the way. Many refer to this as being a serial entrepreneur but I like to stick to the term consultant.

I continue to create more opportunities but as I grew older, I put more focus into my passion which is the non-profit sector. Philanthropy, especially in the inner city, is what continues to drive me. I serve as a board member for the Andrew and Walter Young YMCA in Southwest Atlanta and I am a member of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta. Recently, I got engaged to my best friend, Jeniece Stewart, and we created a marketing and brand management firm, JLQ Marketing, with a concentration in improving non-profits and community organizations. Our first major client is The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been smooth! If it was I would think it would have been a problem! Obstacles are expected and are welcomed. They keep me driven.

Some of the struggles have been separating from some friends because business and friendship do not mix. It is often stressed but I always want to help those in need, especially those closest to me. You have to learn when to say no and step away. Personal life often gets in the way too. As an entrepreneur, I have often had to face a lot on my own but you cannot let personal problems get in the way. Some times you have to take a step back from business to ensure that you take care of personal matters.

T.W.D. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
T.W.D. is a full-service consulting firm. When we say full service, we mean we have the capability to build a company from the ground up. We specialize in small business development. I prefer to be behind-the-scenes but I enjoy seeing the companies we assist succeed.

We have had several clients throughout the years, but I am most proud when we help those that are community-oriented. On top of that, I am very proud to say that we are a family company that builds from within. This company is built to last through generations and we have a model based on the importance of giving back and empowerment. It feels good to know that my children, nieces, and nephews will continue on with our efforts. What sets us apart is our vast relationships in business and the importance of these relationships. A lot of people are all about making as much money as possible. We definitely value the dollar but we also value the long-term connections we create.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
For success, I feel that persistence and humility are key. I have often been a witness to those who are extremely intelligent and afforded great opportunities to fail because they have no drive and they give up easily. On the other hand, a lot of people who were underqualified or struggled early on succeeded because of their determination.

Humility is a big factor in success. A lot of individuals have to learn to close their mouths and open their ears. There is always someone more intelligent or someone with vital knowledge. You have to be able to listen and realize there is always an opportunity to learn.
