Meet Tiffany Dawson of Tiffany Dawson Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Dawson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My photography journey started in the basement of my childhood home. My mother was also a professional photographer and she had her studio down there. I would often be her assistant or model and would help her with setting up her lights and backgrounds, holding the light meter or reflector, I loading film, etc. I entered a lot of photography competitions at a young age as well and traveled with her to many photography conventions. I guess you could say photography is in my blood.

I wanted to become an actual wedding photographer though right after I got married. I was really sad when my wedding was over because I enjoyed the whole planning process so much and I still had the wedding bug! So I just put two loves together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I often find myself thinking about how fast my photography business built and how lucky I am to have had a smooth sailing. For a while, I would just be taking pictures of wildlife and birds. Occasionally I would have a friend or relative ask for me to do their portraits. This year was my first year going full time as a Fine Art Wedding Photographer.

Last year, when I decided that this was really what I wanted, I reached out to several photographers. I was fortunate enough to be connected and shadow under, in my opinion, two of Atlanta’s finest wedding photographers Debbie Neff and Renee Kam.

They allowed me to use the images to establish my own wedding portfolio. They also really helped me build my technical skills and walk me through the whole wedding day process. There are so many special moments and details to capture during weddings and finding unique ways to do so can be a challenge.

Tiffany Dawson Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well, I specialize in Fine art Wedding and Engagement Photography. I am most proud of throwing myself out there and getting my self-started despite the fear of failing. The wedding photography industry, particularly in the Atlanta area is very competitive. There are tons of us! So it was very scary to think that I could be doing this all for nothing. I am the type of person who puts my whole heart in soul into something I start. I have really met the most incredible clients who have supported me more than they’ll ever know!

I think what sets me apart from others is my style. I am a huge color fan! I love bold and bright colors and I love to incorporate them into my work. There are a lot of “Light and Airy” or “Dark and Moody” Photographers. Although I think there work is great, I also think that it isn’t for everyone. I feel my work will last a lifetime. I also love to capture those special moments right after my couple makes each other laugh or give each other a kiss on the forehead. It is really important to me that I bring out their personalities in my photos.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think that would just have to be starting up my own business in general and watching it grow into something successful. I have met my goal for wedding numbers this year, and to me, that is a huge milestone for my business. I also really love when my work gets published! There is something really special about seeing your own work and being recognized in someone else’s features!
