Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Lett.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Cleveland, OH. Before I moved to Atlanta, Cleveland was all I knew. In college, I majored in journalism and promotional communication so writing has always been a part of my life. My goal at the time was to be the next entertainment reporter on E-News.
In 2010, I was in my junior year at Cleveland State University, and in my news writing class, we were assigned to start a blog. Since I got my cosmetology license while I was in high school, I thought talking about hair and beauty would be an easy topic for me. Everyone always asked me for makeup tips and what hair products to use, that it just seemed natural. And that’s when “It’s the Knight Life” was born. I called it that because my middle name is Victoria, and Knight just sounded cool so I made it my broadcasting alias. While I was interning at several broadcasting stations like WKYC, ESPN Cleveland, and TV20 where I did my first celebrity interview with Lil’ Duval.
After graduating, I went through that, “what do I do know” phase, so I started to neglect my blog. I decided that I wanted to move to NYC because I always loved it there plus I had a family member that lived there and she said she was willing to let me stay there until I got on my feet. Well, things didn’t work out and I decided to pack my stuff and move to Atlanta. I literally sold my stuff, packed my clothes in my car, and drove to GA with my mom. It was the scariest this I’ve ever done but it definitely took me out of my comfort shell and made me really hustle for what I wanted.
My feelings and the things I was experiencing helped me gather the courage to restart my blog. I felt so inspired because Atlanta has so much culture, diversity, and opportunities. Since living here, I worked with some makeup and natural hair brands that have trusted me and the work I produce. It really gave me that boost of confidence I needed. Now I refreshed my social pages and plan to launch my new blog in the summer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all! I moved to ATL with no job and a few thousand in my account. Thankfully, I have supportive parents who helped me. Even though they weren’t too far in Florida, I was living in an unfamiliar state by myself. My best friend was living in Atlanta also so I relied on her a lot for support.
I left the broadcasting industry to work in marketing, and because I had no experience in Georgia, it made it harder for me to find a job. In the meantime, I worked at Macy’s doing makeup. I honestly hate working retail, but it was what I had to do to bring some income in. I was really depressed and unhappy with how things were going that the last thing I would want to do is to blog.
It took six months before I found something and it was the longest six months of my life. But I got through it.
My journey taught me to take more chances and to trust my gut. Moving to Atlanta the way I did was the scariest thing I’ve ever done. But I realized I took that chance because I knew I would be fine all along. Although I overthink things sometimes, it’s because I think about multiple solutions. I wish I would have trusted myself more and done it sooner.
This journey also taught me that my community on social media can also be a support system. Sharing my content with women like me, only encouraged me more to keep going.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I currently work in the motorsports industry doing digital marketing. It’s a fun job for me because I still get to combine all of my passions into my corporate job.
Some of the things I do at my corporate job holds true to brands that I collaborate with.
On my spare time, I’m working on relaunching my blog. I’m excited about this because I’m older now and being true to myself and my work, is most important to me right now. I think before, I compared myself to a lot of people that were in the same niche as me. It’s about me being unapologetic and authentic. I’m goofy, outgoing, edgy, have a little potty mouth, and I love trap music. But all those things make me, me. And I’m happy to share that.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I feel like the biggest barrier is just respect. It’s crazy that in 2019, women still have to prove their position and strength. We’ve shown that we can accomplish anything yet we’re still being treated as weak and emotional.
