Today we’d like to introduce you to Akina Bell.
Hi Akina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been interested in drawing and art since I was a child and it was something that I was always passionate about throughout my life! After high school I decided that I wanted to take art more seriously and pursue a degree in Illustration. I traveled from my hometown in Colorado to Atlanta to study Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design! I’ve learned a lot about the illustration industry from SCAD and my art has improved from the guidance of my amazing professors! Currently, I am on an indefinite hiatus from school and I am just focusing on building pieces for my portfolio as well as trying to profit off of my art on the side!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that the journey has definitely not been very smooth! My biggest set back has been that after attending SCAD for 2 and a half years, I had to take time off from school because of financial issues. The last time I was in school was during the Winter 2024 quarter and I am still not sure if I will ever be able to finish my degree. I am now just working trying to save money and keeping myself motivated to make art even if I feel like my future is uncertain!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a digital artist! I enjoy drawing my original characters and fantasy inspired illustrations. I’m also currently working on turning my art into products like prints and stickers to sell at art markets. The piece that I am most proud of is an Illustration I did of The Three of Swords Tarot Card in my own style! This is the piece that most of my friends and family like as well. I love using bright colors and graphic line art in all of my illustrations and I think that I’ve been able to incorporate those elements into all of my pieces, solidifying my art style!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always very introverted and quiet. I barely talked in a lot of my classes, and I really struggled to make friends and socialize. I did various different sports growing up, but I think that art was the most consistent hobby I had. As a kid my mom and I would do arts and crafts and draw together as well as visit different museums. Both of my parents encouraged my creativity and would always buy me different art supplies to try. Art for me was always used as a way to convey my thoughts when I was too afraid to say them out loud. Without art as a child, I would have no way to express my true self to the world.
