Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Delotch Davis.
Hi Alex Delotch, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been working in arts marketing in Atlanta for over 12 years. My career has been very circuitous. When I graduated college, I started working in finance and accounting and quickly realized that I didn’t like it at all. I also realized that I wouldn’t be able to be excellent at something if I wasn’t passionate enough to put in the extra work, beyond office hours. So I quit and decided to follow my curiosity to find my passion. That has led me in a lot of different directions, but a few things have been consistent. I like working with people, I like working with aesthetics and I need to be intellectually stimulated. Working in art, fashion, and design fulfills my criteria for aesthetic and intellectual stimulation, and working as a marketer in the field fulfills my requirement for working with people. My work is my passion so it has become more of a lifestyle than a job.
I’ve been very blessed to carve out space to work on all the things that I love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward. A creative career is not typically a carved path. Doctors, lawyers, and educators, to name a few, have very defined career paths. It is clear how one opportunity should lead to the next. In creative careers, you are really making it up as you go along. You are looking for opportunities to add skills and experiences to your arsenal to help you build and establish the type of expertise that you want to offer the marketplace. It is thrilling and risky in that way, but the payoff is rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an arts marketer. I have worked for an art gallery, the City of Atlanta, luxury brands, and now the High Museum of Art as manager of marketing. As a marketer, my job is to understand the audience that I’m trying to reach, where they are, what my organization has to offer, and how to best communicate the values of that organization to our target audience. I specialize in creating these types of strategies for organizations that want to reach audiences who are culturally motivated and inspired by art and uncommon experiences.
My passion project is Gallerie 88, a media and lifestyle brand. Through our website, we tell stories about creatives of color in art, fashion, and design. We also host events where we pull our community together to meet each other and have really special experiences celebrating creatives who work in a variety of mediums from sculpture and design to fashion and photography.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I read lots of different types of books. Two of my all-time favorites are A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill. I just finished reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler last fall and I really enjoyed discovering her work. I’ve been slowly pouring through the Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George and I recently picked up Subliminal by Leonard Mlodinow. I love books and I actually collect more than I have time to read. So I always have some newly half-read book laying around. Reading is fuel for my ideas.
The New York Times is an important resource for anyone doing any type of work in culture, so I try to keep up with it. Also, my Spotify is essential!
