Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Grant.
Hi Brittney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family has owned restaurants since I was three years old. They always let me bake and when I was a teenager, I started making dessert cakes to sell in our restaurant. I eventually went on to college to become a nurse and shortly after my son was born. My mom approached me and talked me into to coming back to work at the restaurant to have more time with my son. It was around this time I started dabbling in decorated cakes because we had customers who would come in and ask for them. Before long, I was on YouTube researching which led to me signing up for extensive cake schools and taking clay sculpting classes in Atlanta. Then I opened a bakery and it is truly thriving and I have a very successful wedding cake business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hardest thing for me was the challenge of getting my cottage food permit. While we had the restaurant, I didn’t want to depend on my family for my means to my business. I wanted to stand totally on my own 2 feet. Where I was living at the time would not pass inspection for a cottage food permit so I actually had to buy a home in order to achieve my permit which was a huge obstacle in the grand scheme of things.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a very whimsical style when it comes to decorating cakes. I don’t typically make sketches before I start working; I just sort of let the cake tell me what it wants to do! While most people do send inspo photos they typically let me do whatever I want with their cake designs. I personally enjoy realism, sculpting cakes, making sugar flowers, etc. however I rarely have time to do those types of cakes. I currently work closely with a few local venues and they really keep me busy doing wedding cakes. Right Now I’d say dessert bars are in and I do tons of them that accompany a small 2-tier cake.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love my small town! Everyone knows everyone! You really love your neighbors and your customers become like family! If I had one drawback about where I love it would be how far it is to get to bigger chain stores.
