Conversations with Tiffany Amos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Amos.

Hi Tiffany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I learned how to sew at the early age of 8 years old from my mom and oldest sister. We would periodically do most of our garment sewing on weekends and during summer breaks. My mom noticed early on that it was something I should pursue. As time went on teenage life happened and I got away from the craft. Years later after having my third child, I was struggling to find clothes that fit so much so that I looked into having some of the most beautiful Ankara print skirts made. I loved the bold and vibrant prints so much that I was determined to get back to sewing so I could wear as many as I wanted without breaking the bank lol. Once I made that first pleated skirt from one lovely piece, I was hooked. Not only was I proud to be doing what I enjoyed as a child I also found it to be therapeutic which was a win-win for me. I so enjoyed making my own skirts it woke up an eagerness in me to keep going and make all of not only my clothes but a few things for my family also. Upon wearing so many of my handmade garments a friend asked if I could sew for her. After doing so I began to get more and more requests to make custom clothing for others and soon after I was in business. It’s truly been the gift that has given back to me in so many ways that I was able to pursue my dream full time and the freedom it has given is unmatched.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most challenging thing for me has been meeting the expectations of others. I have customers from so many different states so at times, it’s been a challenge getting a feel for the looks they want and at times, I have to go for a feel of their personal style to create a garment that will be perfect for them and the event they need it for. I aim for 100 percent satisfaction so with that I can sometimes be very hard on myself even if it means long nights at the machine to make sure I get it just the way I have envisioned things just for that individual client and their needs. The rewards have been great but I feel like I am literally giving birth with all the pains childbirth comes with when sewing for others lol… literally lol.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a seamstress and pattern design student. I make custom-made clothing. I also test patterns for designers and online customer support for Ellie and Mac pattern design. I am proud to not only sew my own clothing but I learn so much in the world of pattern design and creativity. It’s a whole new world of its own in fashion design that you never stop learning. This is something I love most. What sets me apart is that I will continue to challenge myself for the better always. I am always trying new looks and determined to grow better and better in my craft. I am truly a well-rounded sewist. New looks are always in rotation.

What matters most to you?
The thing that matters the most to me is that I continue to educate myself as the years go by. Learning new techniques is essential to me in so many ways. Fashion is forever evolving and I most evolve with it if I want to make sure I am giving my best with each piece.
