Today we’d like to introduce you to Nic Palmtree.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say my story is unique, but it’s definitely not how I planned my story to go. My dream was to originally become a dentist or an orthodontist. I love seeing people with beautiful smiles so, why not help people achieve that, right? I had full intentions and determination to achieve this dream of mine until I started to take biology and chemistry in college. Now don’t get me wrong, I am truly fascinated with biology and chemistry. However, with the demand that school was requiring me to learn the material at an accelerated pace and take exams every other week on, I could not fully enjoy learning the material the way I wanted to. It almost made me fall out of love with biology and chemistry, and I didn’t think it was worth losing my passion for something that I appreciate so much just for a title. With that being said, I had to make a life decision to shift my focus onto something else. During this confusing time, my best friend Zay was majoring in communications, and he happened to also have a camera. So, one day, we decided to go out and shoot with a camera for fun. As we were shooting, I had an irresistible urge to be behind the camera and try different compositions. It was at that moment when I believe I found a medium to translate the visions of my mind to the world. Later that summer, I invested in a camera and the rest is history. I switched my major to communications the next semester, and I have been connecting all of the dots that I have found with transitioning my major into my photography skills. I owe a lot to my brother Zay. If he didn’t have a camera to expose me to, I don’t know what my focus would be on at the moment. I owe so so much to my parents as well. They have supported any decision that I’ve made, and I wouldn’t be where I am creatively without them.
Please tell us about your art.
I create aesthetics and visuals. At the moment, I am sharpening my photography skills and plan to master them before I transition into videography. I believe I’ll get more out of what I endeavor to do if I focus on one thing at a time and then incorporate it all together once I have mastered all of my mediums like photography, videography, fashion, and even furniture, plus more. I also create tie-dye that I hand draw out on t-shirts with dye. I do all of this as a means of expression. Everything that I’ve created so far, I have envisioned it in my mind and have translated it through the mediums of photography and tie-dye (at the moment). My message that I convey through these mediums are strictly personal to the viewer. I, in no way, am trying to get people to think a certain way through my art but, I am trying to get people to feel a certain way through my art. I believe that is the most important question that I want people to ask. How do you feel? How does this make me feel? Within asking this, my hope is for people to feel my direction or maybe how I feel at that given time.
What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think that the conditions for artists today is so wide open than it’s been in the past years. Its become super easy with the amount of interactions that you have on twitter now. I think that our city is doing a good job to encourage and help artist. The one thing that I think is the most important is a way to make artists art noticeable. I know for me, it means so much when people notice my work and give me feedback.
