Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik “Leek” Breeden.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was never really into music growing up. I was just a fan of music. I played sports since I was like five until I graduated high school. When I was about to graduate though my boy Seldom from high school mentioned to me that I should try making beats. He had started rapping a year or two before he suggested it, but I didn’t pick up any offers, so he asked me to go hard in this music with him. Ever since I’ve been making heat and picking up game. Most importantly I’ve been learning my business and how to handle it when it comes to doing what I need to do, like picking up placements and the back end of tracks or putting money in my pocket.
Please tell us about your art.
I make beats. I’m a producer/beatmaker. I’m also an engineer, though. In my opinion a damn good one too. I enjoy the process of hits being made. I’ve developed an ear, that I’m sure I was born with and was passed down, for hearing abnormalities in the recording process. Not just hearing something that’s noticeably off, but hearing effects and better ways to skew them for enhancement of the sound. So I take pride in my engineering and mixing too, but I do just as much in my production, if not more in my beats. The beat to me is the backbone for any hit. It’s what makes people bob their head off rip.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Attend events. Do anything related to networking. Studios are where I met a lot of artists and made connections. Being an engineer helped me pick up the placements because I could record the song my damn self. But don’t be nervous and build your brand.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Really, whenever you hear my tag “Cook Up That Crack Leek” just know Leek made it. Ain’t really no way to support other than running streams up and buying tracks I made. You can follow me on Twitter @leek_tm and Instagram @leek.tm.
