Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridget (hex) Simms.
Bridget, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve been drawing all my life and knew from a young age that it was what I wanted to pursue professionally. I grew up watching a lot of cartoons and anime, and in a large way, it shaped my path quite a bit. After deciding to go to SCAD and major in animation, I had a super rough time finding my footing and went through a lot mentally. After being a poor barista for almost two years, I got hired at Floyd County Productions to work on Season 9 of Archer. I think luck is real, but hard work is more reliable.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art revolves almost solely on one theme, which is story. I love building characters and worlds for them to live in, creating stories through my art about who they are. I want to create characters that everyone can relate to, from the color of their skin to their genders and goals. I love building on the psychology of my characters and their personality, which will influence my design decision. My goal is to create content that is beautiful and relatable but also fun and relevant. My inspiration comes from everything and everyone around me, and the need to have a voice.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Respect and mental wellness. Patrons often wonder why our work is so expensive, and it’s because you’re getting what you pay for, just like anything else. Artists sometimes sell themselves short, which ultimately hurts the whole community. Most artists work too hard. Take a break. Drink some water and find a hug. Everything will be okay.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work can be found on Instagram @hexpanda, twitter @hexdrawz, and Facebook @bridgetdraws. I also have a Patreon, which is almost like a magazine subscription to me! I share exclusive content there, from phone backgrounds to fan art to sketches that only get released there. The best thing you can do for any artist is to follow them, give them a like, leave a comment. You can support me and many others without spending a dime.
