Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Milstead.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have been drawing as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I would sit down and draw out ideas for video games and comic books. As I got older, I started to blend my love for art with my love for technology. I went to school to learn how to make video games and eventually became a software engineer but I never lost my love for drawing. A few years ago, I discovered the free art movement here in Atlanta and thought it was the perfect way for me to share my creations. Since then, I have started to sell my work at local popups and stores.
Please tell us about your art.
I love to draw characters. Most of my work starts as a sketch. Then I scan it and clean it up digitally. I do a lot of prints on wood but for special shows, I enjoy painting as well. Lately, I have been experimenting with screen printing over paint and resin. I really love the contrast of the shiny resin with the Matte printing ink. There isn’t usually a message or agenda behind my work. I just like to make colorful fun designs.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
For me, the hardest part was sharing my art with other people. It can be so intimidating to work so hard on something and put it out for everyone to see. The more you do it, the easier it gets and you get good feedback that you can use to improve your work.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I sell my work at local popup events and I have some of my work for sale at Home Grown on Memorial drive. I have painted signs that are hanging in Little 5 Points and Decatur. If you would like to find some of the free art that I hide around town, you can follow my Instagram account. I also have a website where I sell my prints.
