Conversations with Blak Raps

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blak Raps.

Hi Blak Raps, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Music has always been a part of my life. My mother and all of my aunts are great singers, and they still sing to this day. Mostly in the church, which is where I got my start in the children’s choir. Also, my older cousin uses to be a part of a rap group, and I would always study them. How they rhymed, how they flowed, their cadence and everything. All of this shaped me as an artist and made me want to pursue this as a career.

I played basketball all my life so I started to treat music like a sport and practiced everyday. I started to become very good at it, and people started noticing. Slowly, but surely I was perfecting my craft and the confidence started to come after that. Fast-forward to today, I can produce, write, and record a song all myself, and it’s all because of my ability to learn and listen. I’m still a student of the game, so everyday, I aim to keep learning and keep growing as an artist.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve been making music for over ten years and it’s still an uphill battle trying to reach the top. I’ve lost friends, girlfriends, even some family members on the way. I try not to mix business and personal because it never ends well, and that’s something I had to learn on my own. Another struggle for me, in the beginning, was falling in love with the process. I wanted things to happen fast. Once I fell in love with it, I realized that’s the only way things work out for you. It’s all a part of my journey and what’s a journey without obstacles?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist, producer, songwriter, and I make clothing. My business, Treehouse Club, LLC, is the umbrella for it all. I specialize in music and clothing. That’s definitely my strong suit. I’m known for my humble but confident character. I treat the CEO just like the janitor so to speak. I’m most proud of the work I’ve been able to release all on my own. I literally handle every aspect of my art. No manager, no label, no investors, no handouts, all me. It gets tough, but I’m always prepared. What sets me apart is my versatility. I may get on a beat and just rap. I may get on a beat and sing a little something melodic. It’s really how the beat hits me and how it makes me feel. I’m blessed to have those qualities in my arsenal.
