Meet Deidra “Deja” Barrett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidra “Deja” Barrett.

Hi Deja, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began smoking cigars several years ago from the imagery it portrayed–success, class, and prestige. As I became immersed with the culture, I started to develop a preference for types of cigars and cigar knowledge. After moving to Atlanta in 2014, Sandy Springs for that matter, I started visiting a newly opened cigar lounge and became a regular—doing so ignited my cigar journey.

My interest in the club scene was no longer there and naturally shifted to cigar lounges. Being on the cigar scene for years on most occasions I was the youngest amongst the smokers—since cigars are historically participated by men, older men—these members of the opposite sex were mostly married. When I’d have friends in town or even dates, I’d bring them to a cigar lounge and have them try a cigar and many times it was their first time and they all had pleasant experiences.

So, an idea emerged to introduce younger people amongst my age group, millennials to cigars and incorporate a dating aspect. Cigar Smoking Singles an event series was formed as an introduction to the world of cigars and a different experience for individuals amongst the dating scene.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The idea of Cigar Smoking Singles came to mind in February 2020. We all know what occurred in the world the following month. So, therefore, I had to put my idea on hold. In 2022 I jumpstarted everything and got everything done in a few months by myself. It has been the most difficult yet gratifying endeavor I’ve ever been apart of. The feedback is excellent, our first event was Oct. 15th, 2022, and going forward we will have events every two-to-three months and as we grow it will take place in other states.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I consider myself a multifaceted person and that’s visible within my career. I am a Public Health Professional, in my day job as a journalist—I create, write, edit and disseminate information about emerging diseases and treatments. Then I have several unrelated businesses, such as Cigar Smoking Singles which stems from my past time of smoking cigars.

In life, I am most proud of my creativity and my ability to pivot and triumph.

With Cigar Smoking Singles what sets me apart is I’m the first to ever think of this and make it happen, I’ve created a niche market within the culture of cigars.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice is to find organizations within your field, some jobs have mentorship groups within the company or industry itself. Don’t be afraid to send an email to a person for mentorship or a company for an Informational Interview. Follow individuals and companies on social media to learn and stay current. Also, YouTube is a great resource for learning just about anything under the sun! Utilize the avenues and resources that are within your reach.
