Meet Yonna Amauri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yonna Amauri.

Hi Yonna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all began with my passion for beauty. I’ve always loved makeup, fashion and hair so when I got old enough, I decided to go to school to pursue a career in makeup. I didn’t start wearing makeup until my sophomore year of high school though. When that started my entire world changed. I became so confident because I explored my personality more, my facial features, and which colors worked best for my skin tone. Going to school for makeup artistry opened my mind as well, I learned about myself a lot more, I am more aware of the world I live in and also how beauty standards impact the city I live in. From there I started working at the beauty stores Ulta and Sephora. It’s a lot of opportunities that comes with being in the beauty industry, from the people you meet to choosing products that best fit your lifestyle.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a long road. I am finding my path in life so the most important thing right now is listening to myself, when I don’t do that it tends to get difficult. I was used to listening to everyone but myself and that’s not gonna get me far, especially in the career that I am in. You have to be confident in yourself and the decisions that you make because you never know what’s ahead of you. I’ll say that has been the most difficult part, finding out who I truly am. Since I am so young and surrounded by the media, it’s always a certain way that I should go and if I don’t go that way it’s looked down on. Everything comes together for the greatest good though so the struggle turns into a blessing sooner or later.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a beauty advisor for Sephora, I help my clients find their correct color match as well as helpful and specific products for their makeup and skincare needs. I also provide makeup services if the client is interested. I specialize in natural beauty, I learn about products that doesn’t have any harmful ingredients to the skin or body, I love to create natural makeup looks as well. Anything that can help you feel more confident and natural is what I am all about. I am most proud of the journey that I had to go through to get to where I am. It took a lot of energy, courage, patience, and learning to get to where I am. I wouldn’t even be able to help others the way I do if I never got comfortable in the uncomfortable. I usually try to leave anybody I interact with feeling good, I know what it feels like to be in a difficult time so I try to give something even if it’s as simple as a smile and an ear to listen; I try to help as much as I can, and I feel that’s what sets me apart. I appreciate life and what it has to offer.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family and my childhood friends have been helpful in this process. Although I have had a lot of moments where I’ve been alone trying to understand life with my own mind, they have been there every step of the way and I would not be where I am today if I didn’t have the support. They have shown me that everything is not as serious as I try to make it. Sometimes it’s okay to put yourself first, if you keep pushing just a little more you’ll see the results you want to see and stay true to yourself. I’ve learned a lot in the past three years and I am grateful.
