We recently had the chance to connect with Karmen Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Karmen, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
For the past year, I have been pursuing my dream career of being an author, and honestly, the scariest part is putting myself out there. It is honestly terrifying presenting my craft for the world to judge, but at the same time, it has been fulfilling in a lot of ways. I have gained so much support over the last year, and it has fueled me to keep going. I enjoy writing, and I am tremendously blessed to be able to do this as a career.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Karmen Scott, and I am a part-time blogger of Child of Purpose, LLC and a full-time author. My writing career started off with the motivation to write blog pieces that motivated and inspired people to know they are not alone in their struggles, mainly focusing on mental health. However, I don’t blog much anymore since I started posting videos on social media through Child of Purpose.
And since doing that, I have shifted my focus to being a full-time author. I have also been able to write in the same manner for fictional characters and ensure that I continue to highlight the importance of mental health awareness.
I do still blog here and there when I feel led to, however, most of my focus has been on putting out books. I specialize in Contemporary Romance Fiction, highlighting Black love, hope, healing, and growth.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I have to say my husband. He is one of the main reasons I took the leap and started taking my craft seriously. His belief in me has pushed me to be brave and not let anyone, including myself, keep me from doing what I know I’m called to do. He’s read all of my blogs, he published my first book for me, he always shares my work, and he just always cheers for me on the sidelines. He’s sacrificed so much to help me pursue this dream, and I could never thank him enough. I truly appreciate him, and I hope I am making him proud.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there have been a few times. When I was writing my blog, I really thought it would just take off, and eventually, I would be able to bring on more writers. I’ve also almost given up on writing books because it’s taking me a little longer to hit certain numbers. But in those moments when I feel like giving up, I have to take a step back and remind myself of why I am doing this in the first place. It’s not for the money, it’s not for the numbers; I’m doing this because I love it and because I want to make ten-year-old me proud. Writing has been my dream since childhood, and I try to keep that in mind.
There are people out there who need to read my blogs and books, and one day, they will come across them. My only job is to write and get it out there. That’s it.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My faith in Jesus. It keeps me strong, it’s what keeps me going. I trust God more than anything, and I know it’s because of Him that I’ve made it this far. That is one relationship I value with all my heart because I know He is always with me, guiding every step I take and every decision I make.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I believe I could, and that’s one thing I would want people to know me for. I’d especially want my kids to see me as someone who didn’t give up and kept going in spite of. I want to be known for writing because of my love for it, because of the stories I told and the impact they left on people. That’s what’s most important to me.
