Manda McKay of Athens, GA on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Manda McKay. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Manda, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Earlier this year, I started a youTube channel (@MandaMcKayArt) to share my tips about becoming more creative. I had been waiting for more “perfect” circumstances, but I decided to stop waiting. I’ve recorded 38 videos so far!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist (predominantly oil painting and photography). I paint pretty peculiar still lifes of assembled natural objects. My hope is to empower people through nature and creativity.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I escaped a kidnapping attempt at age four. It definitely made me feel less safe in the world.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I’ve done that through my paintings. I’ve found that sharing the pain in this manner can help empower other people.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I want to take down the patriarchy.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they say that I was kind.
