Don Miguel shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Don, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m chasing Jesus. Everything else crumbles if I stop. God gave me everything, from my family, friends, this career in the wrestling industry that I’m looking to further. God gave me all these things, he can surely take it all away. Even if he did it anyway while I’m chasing him, blessed be his name. Now I know it is going to always be hard to chase him, because he is literal perfection but I’m hoping that in chasing perfection we land on excellence.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Miguel Arbelaez, but I also go by Don Miguel. I commentate and ring announce for the pro-wrestling industry for multiple promotions such as DWA, NTW on Now That’s TV, Blood and Honey, and many more to come. I’ve gotten to work with wrestling stars that have been on your TV screens and wrestlers who will become stars you see on TV. I’ve been working on my dream for almost three years now and my dream is to be able to work for the biggest companies out there such as WWE, AEW, TNA, etc. I want to one day be able to make my dream the only job I have to worry about and along the way hopefully inspire the next generation in becoming commentators, announcers, and most importantly children of God.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
It was the first time I met the head trainer of the WWA4, now mentor and friend, AR Fox. I had watched him when he was in Lucha Underground and he had one of my favorite matches of all time so safe to say I was definitely a fan. I got to meet him when I was working on a documentary assignment for college. After I interviewed him, I asked if I could give commentary a try since I had been to one of the free weekly Thursday shows and realized mid-show I was saying all the moves out loud, He told me to show up next show and give it a try. That one show has turned to years worth of experience under my belt. AR Fox did not have to give me a chance, but he did anyways. That moment not only made me see the world in a better way, but it changed me. It made me want to help in anyway I could, give opportunities to others, and push myself harder than ever to achieve my dream just so that opportunity he gave me years ago would not go to waste. Since then, failure has never been an option.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be scared of your future, because God has it all taken care of and it will be better than you can imagine.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I rely on Jesus’s ideas, because the moment I rely on my own ideas and understanding is when everything goes wrong. He lived a perfect life, a life without sin, so why would I try to deviate from how he lived if it was perfect? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
It’s something I try to do even if it’s hard. I’m here to serve and I’m happy to serve, it’s a mindset I have to remind myself daily. This career can sometimes be a thankless job, people notice me more when I mess up versus when I do good simply for the fact if I mess up it throws off the audience. Sometimes I can get in my own head and ego when I’m not thanked, but then I remind myself as long as I gave it 100% especially for Jesus then I’m happy.
