Dakeas Wright of Douglasville on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Dakeas Wright and have shared our conversation below.

Dakeas , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Honestly for so long basketball filled this void but as of last year I had my first son. Playing with him has definitely been a blessing and a new way of escaping time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello my name is Coach Keas professional skills developer. I specialize in ball handling. My program has been around now going on 11 years helping players from out the state around the world and mainly the community. The brand is called Nothing Was Handed and the uniqueness around the name itself is what captures the eye of the player, parent. They have a good understanding on what our beliefs are in and what we expect each player mindset to be in joining this program. A brief list of accomplishments I’ve been able to achieve is playing at the collegiate level and semi pro level for 6 years. I also was featured on tour with the legends of Harlem Globetrotters, starred as Kyrie Iriving in video game motion with some of the creators, developers of 2K. Even with these accomplishments it truly was the mindset of Nothing Was Handed, I had to go get it and earn my spot on each level I encountered. Right now myself and my team are working on a few things. Coach Keas Hoops Academy has been growing of the last few years and it’s just a community of players looking to get better whether that’s in person training or virtual. I have my new training weighted slick basketballs dropping later this year. Also a project we are trying to put together now is branching into the AAU / travel basketball market for youth players to gain more exposure.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents definitely showed me about what it takes and working to improve yourself.. my Dad played a huge role in that being a young boy watching his hero.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, but I think that’s the beauty of chasing after something that is bigger than what you can imagine. I’ve had moments of just letting it go but once I fell in love with not the game of basketball but the love of the process, learning the business behind it all learning how to properly build friendships business partners etc it made everything more clear.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I believe as a trainer the biggest downfall is everyone thinking they can train because of the new fad that’s being around it. Also there is no just one way to train

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I just want to story to continue with work ethic will always get you somewhere. Nothing Was Handed is more than just a brand it’s a lifestyle movement.
