We recently had the chance to connect with Trey Lawson and have shared our conversation below.
Trey, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
For me now a normal day is waking up getting the kids ready for school dropping them off then from there immediately into meetings zoom calls while in route to the gym work out run a few games of basketball head back home shower and off to the studio is the only for sure things that I’d do everything else in between is like extra stuff that may come up you know
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Of course , well I’m Trey Lawson ,,, excuse me Grammy award winning multi platinum producer/songwriter Trey Lawson
From Atlanta ga born and raised I got my start in production producing for Waka Flocka👨🏾🔬 Rich Homie Quan Peewee Longway different people in Atlanta different artists in Atlanta where I was introduced to songwriting as I began to further my career by extending my network with bigger writers and bigger producers, which one day you led to me working with the Likes of Chris Brown Usher Ne-Yo and you know one thing led to another worked on a few records by Chris Brown that won a Grammy this year actually 2025 Grammys and from there everything’s been amazing though it’s been an incredible journey, but that’s pretty much me thats Trey Lawson
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That’s an interesting question. I would have to say God did you know because you can’t look for man to really see who you are a see who God created you to be no more than God can you know and honestly, I don’t think there’s anything anybody who can tell you about yourself that’ll make you just feel more about yourself then God can and God can reveal to you , you you know like God had to show me that I was this person God had to show me that I was who he called and I was all these things and I was great. You know God had to show me that man couldn’t show me that like I couldn’t receive that from Man you know and I can’t give Man that credit because Man cant you know? Yeah I could only credit God for that ,
Great question though.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Of course, I almost gave up every day and majority of those days I did give up but the beautiful thing about giving up is you don’t have to quit you know we often times wanna give up sometimes you know it’s supposed to get hard to make you wanna give up but you don’t quit , you give up but you get up you know and that’s the biggest thing we often think about you know damn, I wanna give up but you gotta remember yeah OK cool you might’ve gave up in a second, but get up tomorrow and try it again. Get up later and do it all over you know so yeah we all give up we all have times we want to give up shit like it happens like its the process but it’s also a part of the process like I said to continue going like to keep going like give up sure but tomorrow I give up today and then tomorrow when you get up, try it again like that you know that’s typically how it should be. No we all give up it happens.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Honestly, they’d say family first you know of course my family would be top of the list because you know everything I do essentially is for my family. You know it’s so my kids can grow up and not have to worry about the same things that I worried about growing up you know not having the same struggles they don’t have to go through the same things I went through so like my family first and you know a lot of times before I make a decision I consider my family. I consider how it affect my kids, how to affect my household, you know, and that plays a major part in the damn near every decision I make you know if it’ll hurt my kids if it’ll take away from them then you can kind probably bet your bottom dollar I won’t do it so I say my family first.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I mean for those that don’t know me like they aren’t able and around to see like every day day to see how much I put into it I think one of the things that you know could be most misunderstood and not just about my legacy but any legacy is actually how hard you know we worked to leave the legacy and how much time and energy and effort goes into the legacy itself and leaving a legacy man like it’s a lot of hard work, bro it’s not like you just wake up one morning and it’s all there and it’s like you could just go from there nawl like you work you work at it for years you put in a lot of time blood sweat and tears is a real thing you know that that is real so I think just how much effort really goes into being able to even leave a legacy you know is something I think is misunderstood
