We recently had the chance to connect with Shani Belgrave MD, FACS, FASMBS and have shared our conversation below.
Shani, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose track of time whenever I’m in nature. I can spend hours at the beach just listening to the waves. It’s incredibly relaxing, and the ocean always reminds me that we’re part of something so much bigger than ourselves.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a board-certified bariatric surgeon and the founder of Oneka Bariatrics, a boutique weight-loss and wellness practice in Atlanta. After years of working in traditional medical settings, I launched my own practice to create a more personalized and patient-centered approach. I help people transform their health through both medical weight loss and bariatric surgery, focusing on the mind, body, and lifestyle.
At Oneka Bariatrics, we take a truly comprehensive approach to wellness. Along with medical weight loss and surgery, we offer body composition scans, IV hydration, nutrition guidance, and mindset support to help people understand their bodies, build healthy habits, and feel their best. Community and connection are at the heart of what we do because real transformation goes far beyond the scale.
What I love most about my work is seeing people step into their confidence and feel stronger, healthier, and more empowered in their everyday lives.
I also host a health and wellness podcast and YouTube series called The Coalition Talk Show, where I explore all things health, wellness, and inspiration.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my mother. She always encouraged me to give my very best and showed me that with dedication and consistency, almost anything is possible. Watching her approach challenges with determination and grace shaped the way I set goals for myself and the way I approach my work every day. Her mindset continues to inspire me to aim higher and never give up.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could speak to my younger self, I’d tell her to take up space. It took me years to feel comfortable speaking up and embracing boldness. I’ve learned that humility isn’t about shrinking—it’s about being your best self while recognizing that everyone has value and purpose.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would say authenticity is what matters most to me. I love being around genuine people and real human connection. I also believe laughter is the best medicine, and I try to find joy even when life gets challenging.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I sit in silence. Meditation and prayer are the moments where I can truly reset and reflect.
