Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashna Malik.
Hi Ashna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in New Delhi, India, and attended a school with a really strong arts programme. It was there that I first developed an interest in art and gradually became more and more invested in my art classes. We were trained quite technically, and through that process I realised I had a genuine knack for it.
When it came time to decide what I wanted to study at university, pursuing art felt like the obvious choice. I moved across the world to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, where I earned my BFA in Painting.
After graduating, I moved back home to Delhi and committed myself to a full-time studio practice. Since then, it’s been quite an adventure, one that has led me to the work, opportunities, and experiences that have brought me here today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
t definitely hasn’t been a smooth road,I don’t think anyone’s is. A creative career, especially, can be incredibly uncertain and challenging. But then again, no profession comes without its own set of challenges.
I think most creatives go through very similar struggles, just at different stages of their lives and careers. We all experience moments of self-doubt or sometimes fear of the uncertainty or a lack of opportunities, or maybe periods with tight finances. But despite all of that, I genuinely can’t imagine doing anything else.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work explores the nature of perception. Through dynamic lines and vibrant colours, I create optical plays that challenge the way we see and interpret the world around us. My aim is to disrupt the viewer’s sense of reality, encouraging them to question their own perception and recognise that what we see isn’t always as fixed or objective as we assume.
