Meet Ama Ka’rin of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ama Ka’rin.

Ama, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, but my family is originally from Ghana, so I’ve always felt like I had the best of both worlds. Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up singing in church choirs and always knew, deep down, that I wanted to be an artist.

One thing people don’t know about me is that I always dreamed of living in America. As a kid, I was convinced I’d end up in either New York or Los Angeles. During high school, I got the opportunity to do the EF Exchange Program, and I was placed with a host family in Roanoke, Virginia. That experience changed my life. It was my first time really experiencing America, and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to come back and build a life here.

Life didn’t happen overnight. I eventually moved to Atlanta and became a respiratory therapist, a career I’ve had for many years. Helping people through some of the hardest moments of their lives has kept me grounded and given me a different perspective on life. At the same time, I never let go of my dream. I kept recording, writing, performing, and believing that my moment would come.

Today, my music is a reflection of my journey. It’s influenced by my Ghanaian roots, my Dutch upbringing, and everything I’ve experienced since moving to the U.S. I’m still growing, still learning, and still chasing the same dream I had as a little girl singing in church. The difference now is that I’m living it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I think a lot of people see the social media side of things and assume everything came easy, but they don’t see what happens behind the scenes.

First and foremost, I’m a mother. I’m a single mom to three incredible kids, and they’ve always been my biggest priority. I intentionally kept them off social media because I wanted them to have a normal childhood. Instead of chasing attention online, I kept them busy with sports and activities, and they’ve all grown into amazing athletes and young adults that I’m incredibly proud of.

Chasing your dreams while being the sole provider for your family isn’t easy. There were times when I was working long hours as a respiratory therapist, taking care of my kids, and still finding time to write, record, perform, and invest in my music. There were plenty of sleepless nights, but giving up was never an option.

Another challenge has been navigating the music industry. I’ve met a lot of people who made big promises that never turned into anything. I’ve wasted time, energy, and money believing in opportunities that weren’t real. Those experiences were disappointing, but they also taught me to trust my instincts, protect my business, and keep betting on myself.

Looking back, every setback made me stronger. If anything, those struggles gave me the work ethic and resilience I have today, and I know they’re part of what makes my story worth telling.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer and independent artist, and my music is a blend of Afrofusion, Afrobeats, R&B, reggae, and pop. I don’t like putting myself in one box because I create based on how I feel. If a song feels like Afrobeats, I lean into that. If it calls for R&B, dance, reggae, or pop, I follow it. I’ve never wanted to make music just because it’s trending. I want every song to feel authentic to who I am.

What I’m most proud of is everything I’ve been able to accomplish independently. Without a major label, I’ve built a career that has taken me around the world. I’ve had the honor of opening for Sarkodie, winning GMA USA’s Afropop/Afrobeats Artist of the Year, earning nominations from both GMA USA and the Ghana Entertainment Awards USA, and performing internationally. I’ve also been fortunate to grow a global fanbase with millions of streams across my catalog. Every one of those moments means so much because I know the work, sacrifices, and consistency it took to get there.

I think what sets me apart is that I don’t follow a formula. I create from the heart. My music reflects my Ghanaian roots, my Dutch upbringing, and everything I’ve experienced since moving to the United States. I’m not trying to fit into one lane or be the next version of someone else. I just want to make music that connects with people, no matter where they’re from.

More than anything, I hope my journey reminds people that you don’t have to wait for permission to chase your dreams. You can build something meaningful by staying true to yourself, trusting God’s timing, and refusing to give up.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family, especially my kids, means everything to me. Being their mom is my greatest accomplishment, and they’re the reason I keep pushing, even when life gets hard. Every decision I make is with them in mind. Success is great, but without my family to share it with, it wouldn’t mean nearly as much.
