Life & Work with Kisha of DC & Surrounding Areas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha.

Hi Kisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Aaaah, this takes me back when I think of where I started and how far I’ve come today. I didn’t start with some grand plan to build a lifestyle brand. I’ve always loved to creatively write since early childhood. When I started working in the real world, I would craft weekly newsletters at work to give updates with a quick fun fact. In 2009, I started my natural journey as most of did when Solange debut’d her short crop and Good Hair was in theaters. I documented the growth and found a community that fed my creative spirit. I’d later blog into other avenues. I simply wanted a creative space where I could share the things I genuinely loved: beauty, fashion, now coffee, and the little moments that make everyday life feel special.

As I grew, so did the platform and I started taking it more serious. Life brought seasons of change, from my weight loss journey where I’ve shared I went to Mexico solo for the sleeve and becoming an empty nester as of last year to navigating grief and discovering new passions because after experiencing so much death back to back; I’ve gained a will to not just live but thrive. Somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t just creating content. I was telling stories!

That shift led me to rebrand from Balls of Beauty to The Dainty Brew, an editorial lifestyle platform that blends style, beauty, coffee culture, and thoughtful reflections. I’d like for the reader to think of it as a magazine or newspaper but I also want you to feel like we are on a coffee date; playing catch up, sharing resources and just pouring **no pun intended this time, lol** into each other. Whether I’m sharing a Sip Trip, my monthly Nail Files, or a great fashion find, my hope is that people leave feeling inspired to find a little more beauty in their everyday lives.

I’m still building, still learning, and still dreaming big and open to receiving my blessings, but I think that’s the best part of the journey. Every chapter has given me something worth sharing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As smooth as unraveled driveways, lol. Like most creative journeys, there have been plenty of moments where I questioned myself and dropped the ball **pun intended there, lol** plenty of times. Creating has always come naturally to me, but consistently editing, publishing, and putting my work out into the world has been a different story. Sometimes the biggest obstacle wasn’t a lack of ideas. It was getting out of my own way. I’m just now after over 10 yrs of blogging finding a good groove but that’s mainly because I post without a care in a sense of…no expectations and as if nobody is watching.

I’ve also learned that it’s okay for your vision to evolve. What started as a natural hair blog eventually became The Dainty Brew because I outgrew the box I had originally created for myself and I mean-with life, you go through different life experiences. Listening to people say “Find Your Niche” made me feel like I couldn’t color outside the lines. With that transition took patience, clarity, and the confidence to build something that felt more authentic without compromising myself for the sake of a like or brand deal.

Looking back, every detour and hiatus taught me something. Those challenges helped me find my voice, and today I’m creating with much more intention than I ever have before.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By day, I’m an Executive Assistant supporting executives at the C-suite level, and by passion, I’m the creator behind The Dainty Brew. Those two worlds may seem different, but they’ve shaped each other more than people might expect.

My professional career has taught me the value of presentation, organization, communication which I have a BA in, and confidence, while The Dainty Brew gives me a place to express my creativity through fashion, beauty, coffee culture, and storytelling through writing. If you’ve noticed, the tone in how I speak is in my work. I tend to write how I “tawk” so you can read it in my voice, lol.

One of my favorite parts of the brand is sharing what I call Werk Couture, where I show that office style can be polished without losing your personality. I also enjoy sharing workplace insights that help professionals navigate corporate life with confidence because I’ve spent years seeing what it takes to thrive behind the scenes and recognize good help is hard to find. If I could, I’d craft an Admin 101 class. I’ve been everywhere from customer service, dispatching, receptionist, admin and now executive assistant. I’m well rounded in the game! Aside from the technical skills you need, there’s one component as a soft skill that sets me apart-my personality.

What I’m most proud of is creating a platform that feels authentic to every part of who I am. I don’t believe you have to choose between being career-driven and creative. You can lead a meeting, wear a great outfit, enjoy an afternoon coffee, and still find joy in the little things. That’s the story I hope people see when they visit The Dainty Brew.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been a dreamer. I knew early on I was different and use to tell people I was from Mars, lol. My mother didn’t like it. I’ve always been fascinated by astronomy. I’m a star gazer for sure. One thing someone will tell you no matter what stage of life they’ve met me; they’d consistently call me CRAZY!! In a good way though…let the record reflect, lol. My favorite subject in school was always English and secretly wanted to be in the spelling bees. I guess you can say…I was a pretty precocious little girl growing up.

I didn’t do Barbie’s but I definitely collected Cabbage Patch dolls up until I turned 18 actually. Just time traveling back to thinking of that feeling when I opened my Christmas gift to reveal a fresh yarn haired chubby cheeked baby puts the biggest smile on my face right now.

My biggest interest as a child which may seem surprising is COMEDY!! I can remember when I first saw Eddie Murphy’s standup “Raw” and could recite the whole bit-word for word. When my mom would fuss at me about something I’d break the mood and shout LILLIAAAAAN you can NOT go outside-lmaoooo!! Def Comedy Jam came on midnights and I’d sneak downstairs and turn the TV low and sit up close to the screen to listen. Comedians not just tickle me but I see their stories deeper than a laugh. I can relate as a comedian in many ways but it’s definitely allowed me to hone in on some wits and tough skin in life.
