Today we’d like to introduce you to Trish Land.
Hi Trish, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“I don’t paint what I see. I paint what beauty feels like when we finally slow down long enough to notice it.”
I’ve been a storyteller for as long as I can remember.
Before I painted, I danced. Dance taught me that the most meaningful stories are often told without words—that emotion lives in rhythm, movement, silence, and light. When I eventually found painting, I discovered another language, one that allows mystery to unfold slowly, inviting each viewer to find their own story.
Painting is less about creating an image than creating an experience.
Every morning I begin with a blank surface and the quiet hope of seeing the world with fresh eyes. I don’t begin with certainty. I begin with curiosity. Through layers of acrylic, oil, and mixed media, each painting gradually reveals itself. Transparent underpaintings remain visible beneath the surface, allowing history, memory, and discovery to become part of the finished work.
Nature has always been my greatest teacher. Growing up in the woods of South Georgia, I learned that beauty isn’t something we chase—it patiently waits to be noticed. Light filtering through trees, weathered branches, changing skies, and quiet mornings taught me to pay attention. Those lessons continue to shape every painting I make.
Perhaps that’s why there is a gentleness in my work. Kindness, grace, and beauty are not simply subjects I paint; they are values I hope each piece carries into the world. As a Southerner, I love the way stories linger, the way conversation unfolds without hurry, and the way small gestures can make us feel at home. If I could, every painting would come with a slice of pie.
Although I am largely self-taught, my education has come through travel, art residencies, and a lifelong commitment to observing the world with wonder. Every journey reminds me that the artist’s greatest responsibility is not simply to look—but to truly see.
My hope is that each painting offers a moment of stillness in a hurried world. A place where people can breathe a little deeper, linger a little longer, and reconnect with something quietly beautiful within themselves.
Because beauty has always been there.
Sometimes we simply need to slow down long enough to notice it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m an eternal optimist when it comes to my work. I have felt all along on this creative journey that all I needed to do was to keep my head up. Keep going.
Keep following my muse.
Keep noticing everything!
I was taught at an early age that I needed to make money. That I needed to provide for myself and I figured out early on in my career how to do that. I love people and I felt like my paintings were an extension of a conversation I wanted to have with someone.
So I just kept painting. Until someone wanted to jump in and share this creative conversation with me. It’s worked out pretty well so far!
I have enormous gratitude for the people who collect my work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve always been interested in the light. I think I’m like a cat who always looks for that spot of light to land on.
My path has been rather interesting. As I have tried so many different mediums because there are so many! And I live with curiosity on a daily basis. I have a saying that plays in my head when I work… “What if“…. And it helps me stay loose with my choices.
And it keeps it fun for me. I don’t need to know everything all the time!
I work in oil and acrylic. I play around with graphite and charcoal and gold leaf… Sometimes whatever’s within arms reach in my studio! I think what I’m most known for is my blending technique. The layers of translucent color creating a moment where your eyes close for a brief second as you lay your hand on your chest and breathe. I like breathing a lot. And I feel like breath is evident in how I paint.
I paint what I need. And I have a strong desire to feel good!
I’m not afraid of Color… Especially quinacridone magenta or fuchsia! I often start every painting with that color. And sometimes it’s the star and sometimes it’s layered over in a way where only the glow of it shows through.
I love painting the energy of the places I know and love so well. Like Georgia and France. I have a company called Muse Destination Workshops. I take groups of painters to the Burgundy region every year on a painting retreat. It’s the most magical thing I know!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Confidence.
I never judge myself when I work. And I do my best to stay true to what I thrive on. Pure heart. Trust and belief in myself. Knowing that it’s just paint… And having the discipline to continue to explore this creative world. I ask myself all the time “what story do I want to tell?”
And having my life practice of believing in myself going hand in hand is how I got to this place in my work.
