Inspiring Conversations with Amir Abdullah of Martha T’s Famous Pudding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amir Abdullah.

Amir, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Amir Abdullah, and I am a sophomore at Clark Atlanta University majoring in Business Administration with concentrations in International Business and Finance. I am also the founder of Martha T’s Famous Pudding, a business that represents far more than dessert; it represents family, legacy, faith, and the belief that something made with love can bring people together.

The story of Martha T’s Famous Pudding began long before I was born. It starts with my grandmother, Martha Thomas, in Port Arthur, Texas. Ever since she was a young woman, cooking was one of her greatest passions. She loved experimenting in the kitchen, and no matter what she prepared, people always came back asking for more. But there was one recipe that stood above the rest: her homemade banana pudding.

Growing up, my younger brother Akil and I spent countless days at my grandparents’ house. While most kids my age were outside playing, I found myself drawn to the kitchen. I watched my grandmother cook for hours with incredible patience and care. I can still remember sitting in the living room, watching people come in and go from the house, carrying pans of her banana pudding. Every single person left smiling. At the time, I didn’t fully understand why her pudding meant so much to people. Looking back now, I realize it wasn’t just about the dessert; it was about how she made people feel. Her food created joy, comfort, and connection. Without knowing it, she was teaching me that food has the power to bring people together.

My journey as an entrepreneur actually started before I ever sold a single pudding.

In middle school, I attended Sam Jamison Middle School, where I participated in a fundraising program that involved selling chocolate. Although we didn’t receive the money until the fundraiser ended, I became fascinated with the process of selling. I sold chocolate before school, during lunch, after school, at football practice, wherever I had the opportunity. I loved talking to customers, building relationships, and seeing my hard work pay off. I wasn’t just selling chocolate; I was discovering a passion for entrepreneurship.

That passion continued into high school. I sold snacks and candy whenever I could until the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily brought everything to a stop. Once life returned to normal, I knew I wanted to build something bigger.

As a freshman at Manvel High School, I enrolled in Culinary Arts because I genuinely loved cooking. Around that same time, my father decided he wanted to learn my grandmother’s famous banana pudding recipe. My grandmother walked him through it over the phone, and after he successfully made it, I asked him to teach me. I brought my first batch to my culinary class, and my classmates absolutely loved it.

Before settling on pudding, I even experimented with selling fried Oreos. They weren’t nearly as successful, but that experience taught me an important lesson: every entrepreneur has to be willing to fail before finding the right opportunity.

During my sophomore year, I worked my first job at Sonic earning $9.30 an hour. I was grateful for the experience, but I wanted more than just a paycheck; I wanted ownership over my future.

That’s when I decided to bring banana pudding to school.

Every morning I carried two backpacks: one filled with textbooks and another filled with pudding. Knowing my generation wasn’t always excited about bananas, I introduced Cookie Pudding alongside the original recipe. It sold out almost immediately. I started by bringing ten puddings a day, and many times they were gone before lunch even started. Soon, students were messaging me asking if I had more.

As demand grew, so did my confidence.

I eventually left Sonic to work at Whataburger and later H-E-B, but no matter where I worked, I continued investing in my business. I doubled my production, expanded to new lunch periods, and built relationships with teachers, staff, and students who became loyal customers. There were challenges along the way, including having my pudding confiscated by an assistant principal, but I didn’t allow setbacks to stop me. I simply came back the next day determined to keep going.

By my junior year, I wanted to innovate rather than stay comfortable. I introduced Strawberry Pudding, which quickly became one of my best-selling flavors. Later, after visiting Atlanta for the first time, I discovered Biscoff cookies during my flight home. That one snack inspired another flavor that eventually became part of my growing menu.

During my senior year, I wasn’t completely sure what my future looked like. My father, a proud Clark Atlanta University alumnus, often shared stories about his experiences there and spoke highly of the university. His stories sparked my curiosity, so during my fall break, my father and I traveled to Atlanta to tour several colleges. Coincidentally, Clark Atlanta was celebrating Homecoming that week, giving me the opportunity to experience the campus at one of its most exciting times.

That trip changed my life.

Walking through the Atlanta University Center, seeing thousands of students chasing their dreams, watching small businesses thrive, and feeling the city’s energy, I knew I had found where I belonged. It wasn’t just a college visit; it felt like God was opening a door and showing me the next chapter of my life.

When I returned home, I immediately applied to Clark Atlanta University. Within a week, I had been accepted.

I arrived on campus with one goal: to continue my grandmother’s legacy.

During my very first week at Clark Atlanta, I started selling pudding, and the response exceeded all my expectations. Word spread quickly across campus. Students kept coming back, faculty and staff became customers, campus security supported my business, and even Vice President Dr. Peters became one of my supporters.

As my business continued to grow, I expanded beyond the residence halls. I participated in vendor markets, sold during campus events, and served customers throughout the Atlanta University Center community. Every sale reminded me of something I witnessed as a child: people walking away smiling, just like they did from my grandparents’ house years ago.

Today, Martha T’s Famous Pudding is about much more than dessert. It is a tribute to my grandmother, whose love continues to inspire everything I do. Every pudding I make carries a piece of her legacy, and every customer who supports my business becomes part of that story.

As I begin my sophomore year at Clark Atlanta University, my vision extends far beyond campus. My goal is to build Martha T’s Famous Pudding into a nationally recognized brand while creating opportunities for others and showing young entrepreneurs, especially those who look like me, that their dreams are possible through faith, consistency, and hard work.

Everything I have built started in my grandmother’s kitchen. I am simply honored to continue the legacy she began.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road, but I believe every challenge has helped shape me into the entrepreneur I am today.

Balancing a business while being a full-time college student isn’t easy. There have been countless events, parties, and opportunities to relax that I’ve had to pass up because my business comes first. Since I don’t have a car, every batch of pudding starts with a walk to the Walmart Neighborhood Market to buy my ingredients. From there, I carry everything back to campus, spend hours preparing each order, and then walk across the Atlanta University Center to deliver them to my customers. Every step of the process is done by me.

Many nights, after finishing homework and studying, I don’t begin making pudding until late in the evening. It’s not uncommon for me to be up until one, two, or even three o’clock in the morning, only to wake up a few hours later for an 8 a.m. class. At the same time, I have to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA to keep my merit scholarship, so excellence in the classroom is just as important to me as excellence in my business.

Of course, there are moments when it gets exhausting. There are days when I wish the process were easier. But I’ve never been someone who runs from challenges; I welcome them. Every obstacle has taught me discipline, resilience, and perseverance. The long nights, the early mornings, the miles I’ve walked, and the sacrifices I’ve made have all been investments in a dream that is bigger than myself.

At the end of the day, seeing customers come back with a smile, hearing how much they enjoy my grandmother’s recipe, and knowing I’m building something that honors her legacy makes every sacrifice worth it. Challenges don’t discourage me; they motivate me to work even harder.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Martha T’s Famous Pudding is more than a dessert business; it’s a family legacy brought to life. Every recipe is inspired by my grandmother, Martha Thomas, whose love for cooking and serving others laid the foundation for everything I do today. Every cup of pudding I make carries a piece of her story, and every customer who takes a bite becomes a part of that legacy.

Since arriving at Clark Atlanta University, I’ve had the privilege of serving students, faculty, staff, and the entire Atlanta University Center community. As my business continues to grow, my goal is to expand beyond campus and share Martha T’s Famous Pudding throughout the Atlanta community, including Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, local businesses, and events across the city.

We offer a wide variety of handcrafted flavors, including our signature Banana Pudding, Strawberry, Oreo, Biscoff, Biscoff Strawberry, Caramel, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Red Velvet, Biscoff Caramel, and many more seasonal creations. We also provide catering, vendor services, private parties, community events, and special occasions. As the business continues to grow, I’m excited to introduce even more innovative flavors, including a vegan pudding option, so more people can experience what Martha T’s Famous Pudding has to offer.

What truly sets us apart isn’t just the variety of flavors; it’s the heart behind every product. In a world where so many desserts are mass-produced, every pudding I make is handcrafted with care, patience, and pride. I don’t believe I’m simply selling dessert; I’m creating an experience that reminds people of home, family, and togetherness. That’s why so many of my customers don’t just buy once; they come back again and again.

The brand I’m building is rooted in Southern hospitality and the values my grandmother instilled in our family. What started in her kitchen in Port Arthur, Texas, has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined. My vision is to take that same authentic, homemade recipe from a small Southeast Texas community and introduce it to people across Atlanta, across the country, and one day around the world.

When people hear the name Martha T’s Famous Pudding, I don’t just want them to think of great banana pudding. I want them to think of family, tradition, excellence, and a young entrepreneur honoring his grandmother’s legacy, one pudding at a time.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If there’s one thing I hope readers take away from my story, it’s that your circumstances do not determine your future. No matter where you come from or what obstacles stand in your way, you have the ability to create something meaningful if you’re willing to believe in yourself and put in the work.

There were moments when I never imagined I would attend college, let alone build a business that would become part of the Clark Atlanta University community. Looking back, I’m grateful for every challenge, every late night, every setback, and every lesson because each one prepared me for where I am today. Success doesn’t happen overnight; it comes from consistency, faith, and the courage to keep going when no one is watching.

To the next generation of entrepreneurs, dreamers, and creators: don’t be afraid to bet on yourself. Be bold enough to chase the vision God has placed on your heart, even if it doesn’t make sense to everyone else. The road won’t always be easy, but the greatest accomplishments rarely come from taking the easy path. Stay humble, stay disciplined, and never stop learning.

Above all, keep God at the center of everything you do. There have been many moments when my faith carried me through challenges that I couldn’t have overcome on my own. No matter how successful I become, I never want to forget where every blessing comes from.

Finally, I want to thank my parents, my godmother, my grandparents, and my entire family for believing in me long before anyone else did. Their love, encouragement, and sacrifices have shaped the person I am today. This journey may bear my name, but it is built on the foundation they gave me.

This is only the beginning for Martha T’s Famous Pudding. My hope is that one day, when people see the name Martha T’s Famous Pudding, they won’t just think about dessert; they’ll think about legacy, perseverance, faith, and the reminder that one dream can inspire generations.
