Today we’d like to introduce you to Mara Lissel.
Hi Mara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before I was a photographer, I learned the art of assisting through helping my mom who also does photography. She had always been pretty creative, and so a lot of my passion was inherited from her. I mainly did video editing before getting into photography in middle school. Eventually, during college, I decided it was something I wanted to seriously pursue along with public relations and marketing. I took the initiative of connecting with other creatives here in Atlanta, and it really helped me develop my style and figure out what kind of photography I wanted to focus on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all! There have been lots of ups and downs. A big part of making photo and video my profession has been learning about the business behind art, and beyond that, learning to stand my ground and turn away people who don’t respect my business or the boundaries I hold around it. I’ve had to deal with being looked down on for being younger, for being a woman, and for being “less experienced”. However, I’m learning every day and trying to roll with the punches as much as I can, and it’s thankfully paid off so far.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to say I’m a multi-hyphenate creative because I truly can’t sum up everything I do into one title. I’m a photographer and videographer, but I also edit and direct. I have a degree in public relations and marketing, and I love making social media content. If there’s anything I can’t do, I force myself to figure it out because I want to learn and be able to do everything!
That said, right now, I’m best known for my photography. I specialize in music, commercial, and editorial photography, but I will shoot pretty much anything under the sun. I think that is exactly what sets me apart from other photographers. I don’t like to limit myself to any specific “niche”. If I feel I can execute the vision and truly bring it to life, I’m doing it. That passion and drive is what makes me feel proud of my work.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
