Community Highlights: Meet Monique Hyman of Unbound Fragrances

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Hyman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always believed in God and I did a lot of spiritual soul-searching my whole life. I always believed in Jesus, but he was not the Lord of my life, and I never knew it what it meant to be free in Christ or to have the freedom of the salvation that Christ to brings.

it wasn’t until I truly surrendered my life over to Christ in October 2024 that I learned what that meant. And God immediately started to prune me and show me who he is the moment I truly let him in my life as Lord of my life.

Immediately, in that process, he began to fill my life up. One of the things he did was gave me Unbound Fragrances as a company to steward for his glory. It came about when I was looking for a Christian Perfume brand for myself to wear. I was kind of fed up with the designer perfumes I was wearing. They did not represent Christ. Well a lot of of them were Anti-Christian and even Anti-Black in some cases and so I spoke with God and I said, “God, these perfumes don’t honor you.”

I began to look for Christian perfumes and I found a brand and it was OK, but I wasn’t satisfied with what the fragrance market offered in terms of Christian perfumes as a whole. I remember hearing from the Holy Spirit that I can make my own Perfume. And so I bought a couple packs of essential oils and fragrance oils and I combined them with some rubbing alcohol, ha ha, and I began to make these very “humble” perfumes haha.

A few weeks later, I was talking to a couple of my sisters In Christ, and one of them said that I should start selling them. That was never my intention. Immediately the name came to me, Unbound. And it was all about being Unbound from the stronghold that designers had over the fragrance market—to introduce Christian luxury designer fragrances that glorified God in a historically secular space.

Very quickly it became all about expressing the freedom of Christ through fragrance. That’s what Unbound is all about. You can make your own Perfume. You can collaborate with Unbound to design your own fragrance Line, or you can buy one of our many luxury products, all of which are rooted in scripture and based on biblical principles. The journey has been a blessing and I have learned to surrender it to God to give him back the business that he has allowed me to steward and when I do that, I get the blessing of watching it grow.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
They have been a lot of challenges. But God has always provided. I would like to say one of which is financial but it’s hard to say that. I am also getting my PhD at Florida State and somehow God has allowed me to also start a business on a student salary. it is truly by his provision and I’ve done very many vending events and some of them cost a lot of money. Interestingly God has always allowed me to make my vending fees, one way or another it’s like I’ve heard him say in my heart that he will not charge me to spread his gospel.

One of the current challenges we’re facing is endurance, which is funny because it’s the name of one of the newest fragrance projects we have in a collaboration with @Dmiracle_retail. Honestly just being faithful steadfast, even when I don’t necessarily see the growth that I want to see. Being humble, taking a moment to step back and realize that God is faithful and we are growing and that it’s not about the numbers it’s about the ministry. I have to constantly recognize that God is truly providing, and has provided from the beginning. He is true to His Word, and to all of His promises His answers are Yes and Amen.

Walking in that steady faith has been a big challenge and one of the most grounding scriptures that was given to me from a friend, and minister, early on comes from Zachariah 4:10 where it says “do not despise the small beginnings for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Unbound Fragrances is more than a fragrance house—this business is ministry. We exist to glorify God and share the freedom of Jesus Christ through the art and experience of fragrance. Everything we create is rooted in Scripture, prayer, intention, and love.

We specialize in handcrafted, small-batch luxury perfumes, colognes, perfume oils, custom fragrances, small-scale wholesale, and interactive perfume-making workshops. Our fragrances are distinctive, artistic, and set apart, but they remain accessible. We believe people should be able to experience an elevated luxury product dedicated unapologetically to Christ without luxury becoming financially out of reach.

What truly sets Unbound apart is the freedom we give people to participate in the creative process. Our small-scale wholesale program has minimum orders as low as just 10 bottles, allowing emerging entrepreneurs, ministries, artists, organizations, and small businesses to create their own fragrance products without investing in hundreds of units. Clients can develop a custom scent, personalize their labels, and design packaging that reflects their own vision. We make the world of perfumery approachable, personal, and accessible.

Our workshops carry that same spirit of freedom. We collaborate with churches, organizations, businesses, and community groups to create immersive experiences where participants learn about perfumery, explore fragrance materials, and design scents that express who they are. These workshops are creative, joyful, luxurious, and centered on the freedom found in Christ.
