Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Riley.
Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised amidst the artistic influences of Atlanta, Georgia. My hands found a pen before my memory really started keeping track. Art class was the only hour of school I actually cared about.
It took years of finished drawings (and a lot of failed ones) before I figured out a system that worked. Proportions, layering, patience. Once I had it, I couldn’t unsee it. So I started filming.
I share my work and process online to a community of artists who, like me, believe great art doesn’t have to come from expensive supplies or “natural talent”.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve faced two major challenges along the way. The first was being a self-taught artist trying to figure out how to create realistic portraits using nothing more than a cheap pen. There were many failures, but each one taught me something valuable that shaped the artist I am today.
The second challenge was learning how to monetize my art. I was always haunted by the ‘starving artist’ stereotype and afraid that pursuing my passion wouldn’t be enough to sustain me. Over time I figured out how to build systems that allowed me to profit from my talents through commissions and content creation and that shift changed everything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a visual artist who not only creates and sells original work, but also teaches other artists how to improve their craft through my content and courses. At the heart of everything I do is a genuine desire to help others unlock their artistic potential.
I’m best known for creating strikingly realistic portrait drawings using nothing but a ballpoint pen; a medium that most people would never associate with the level of detail and realism I’m able to achieve. My work has been recognized and owned by many influential individuals, and one of my most memorable early milestones was a commission from DJ D-Nice, which brought a significant amount of attention to my work and really put me on the map as an artist.
What sets me apart is my unique process for creating portraits that captures the essence of a person in a way that feels alive on paper, and my ability to break down complex techniques into tutorials that anyone can follow, regardless of their experience level. I’ve always believed that art shouldn’t feel intimidating, and that philosophy shows in everything I create and teach.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has definitely played a role in my journey, and at times it has felt almost surreal. From an old classmate reaching out to connect me with famous streamers he worked with, to transferring to my dream college only to discover they were looking for transfer students to award a full scholarship to. The timing of certain moments in my life has been nothing short of remarkable.
But I’ve come to believe that luck isn’t entirely random. Once you align yourself with your passion and commit to it fully, the world has a way of lining up in your favor. Opportunities seem to find you when you’re moving with purpose.
That said, things haven’t always gone according to plan. There have been plenty of setbacks and redirections along the way. What I’ve learned is to move on as quickly as possible rather than dwelling in those moments. The world doesn’t stop for you, there is no perfect moment, and waiting for one will only hold you back. My mindset has always been to just do it, learn from it, and move straight on to the next thing.
