Rising Stars: Meet Lisa Love of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Love.

Hi Lisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts with a PMDD ( Pre Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder) aka debilitating PMS diagnosis in the mid 90’s. I was a news reporter struggling to perform my duties! Doctors either suggested it was in my head or prescribed medications that made me sleepy &;provided no relief. After a few years, a fellow journalist referred me to an Integrative Medicine Physician – Dr. David Williams. I walked into his office & he asked if he could pray for me! I walked out with a bag of herbal teas instead of a prescription for western meds. I felt better within 45 days and it kept getting better. From there I developed fibroids, had 2 surgeries & recurring fibroids. An Herbalist suggested my diet was the problem! It was! No more surgeries! No more fibroids! In 2012 after watching my older sister suffer through Perimenopause, I decided to take to become an Herbalist! I went to school, but ended up getting the best training from local herbalists & bush doctors in Jamaica (where I’ve traveled to & from extensively since the early 90’s — initially for vacay)! Then came COVID 19 & the pandemic! While I was consistently helping family & friends with common health issues that impact many African Americans (hbp, diabetes, obesity&:women’s hormonal issues, plant forward eating with ease) — I was not really conducting business. In 2020, my hobby became a business when the demand for sea moss, wild elderberry, Ashwagandha & other herbs; plus advice quickly became demanding, expensive & overwhelming! I was consistently traveling to &:from Jamaica per usual bringing back wildcrafted sea moss &:herbs. A very good friend & now business partner who lives there helped me source divers, growers & product. She began shopping the products that I could not transport. And, I would return to pick up sea moss left there to dry in the mountains. Jam Moss Sea Moss &:Wellness Essentials was born. It joined No Sweat Plus – All Natural Solutions For Perimenopause PMS & Menopause (circa 2018): and was joined by Plant Based Vibes, ATL & Urban Herbalist Atl. All of these companies are weaved together & represent every part of me &:what I have to offer!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road all of the time, but I have certainly been blessed with many very well paved roads! I am a free hearted Pisces & want to give away the house & help the world. It was a huge struggle for me learning how to charge for my services. I was always wondering how to charge ..what to charge? Another struggle was learning how to interweave my services so that clients understand — they are all connected!! Heart disease for instance begs for a variety of lifestyle adjustments (dietary, movement, stress management) elimination, supplements &: mindfulness techniques). There are no magic pills when it comes to herbalism & holistic measures to help the body to support itself! This is how extension businesses kept coming about. Funding has been another road block. Investors sound good until, they don’t understand your business model & ideals! Yes, I could definitely make a lot more money & enter bigger markets with pasteurized cold pressed juices & shelf stable sea moss gels made with love and …preservatives! Non organic herbs vs organic – much cheaper!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Although I used to work as a “professional” journalist, I left & kind of explored other areas of interest once my kids were educated & productive citizens! I was even a flight attendant for a few years which funded my travels beautifully! After the pandemic & 2 broken toes shut down my fly girl days –I decided to use my journalism experience – writing, talking, content creation, storytelling, my love of cooking, love of herbs & Pisces creativity to start spreading the word to anyone interested. It went something like this: “You don’t have to suffer with PMS,fibroids, hot flashes, hbp, low libido, erectile dysfunction, etc just because your parents did! Most of it is lifestyle vs genetics. I have a family history of heart disease (strokes, hbp & heart attacks). These holistic measures can help!: This is what I do. This is what the science says!” I am able to combine my professional & creative skills to lean into my path & true purpose!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me today is very simple and very different from what it was when I started my adult journey.

My definition of success is waking up everyday knowing that I get to do what it is that I truly love doing with no worries. This kind of joy is priceless. Success for me is also knowing that I leave my children, grandkids & my tribe of nieces & nephews a simple, yet profound legacy: “To thine own self be true”!
