Today we’d like to introduce you to Danae Marks.

Hi Danae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story starts at the age of 8, making my sister and anyone who would participate in creating short videos on my family’s camcorder. Those small videos turned into my passion for filmmaking, that was then reinforced in my high school years leading me to taking audio, visual, tech classes, to getting my Bachelor’s at Georgia State University. Now my story is perfecting my craft as a filmmaker day by day on various projects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely a climb to get to the level that I am facing now. While in college, I struggled with working a job, balancing classes (of course a certain GPA), and my mental health. I was able to overcome those obstacles by leaning on my community which included my wonderful family that always took the time to show their support, my friends that would be there for me to constantly remind me that filmmaking is my calling, and my boyfriend who was always encouraging me to keep working.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a filmmaker with a passion for directing. The stories I focus on, are on black stories from various genres allowing me the opportunity to showcase a wide scale of perspectives. That is why one of my projects that I am proud to bring to light is my feature film. The film focuses on overcoming anxiety as a Gen Z black girl, while also figuring out her new workplace, where she constantly has to fight for her voice.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson that I am continuing to learn, is the act of trusting myself. Being a director I must trust in my vision and although I always have faith in myself sometimes I need the extra encouragement to trust in my abilities.
