Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasheika Duffus.
Chef Sasheika Duffus’ crave for cooking began as a young child. Being the oldest of her three siblings, she has always taken the initiative to help her mother prepare meals daily for her family. She later attended a tech high school where she majored in Culinary Arts. This is where she fell in love with the heat of the kitchen. Eager to learn from some of the best Master Chefs in history, she completed her culinary training at The Culinary Institute of America in 2018 on a $107,000 scholarship. She was awarded for placing highest-ranked cook in a High School regional cooking competition. Shortly after graduation, her passion and devotion for culinary excellence led her to birth The Sapid Experience Catering & Events.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe that any path consists of a smooth road, I think like any business you have to learn to adapt to adversity continuously. It’s what makes us entrepreneurs able to sustain. The biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome is the desire to be the best in the field! It may sound crazy but that urge to be the best amongst so many can be destructive in more ways than it can positively affect you. With social media so predominant, it’s easy to get lost in competition amongst others when your biggest competitor is truly yourself and I wish more entrepreneurs could grasp the concept.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a chef in a time so modern and ever-changing, adaptation is key to survival. Although we offer a meal prep, cooking classes, a cookware line, event catering. Being a traveling chef gives me the opportunity to meet so many diverse people, travel as well as tend to the culinary needs of each customer and this never makes a day on the “job” boring. What sets me apart from others is how knowledgeable I am about what I do! I pride myself in learning new things daily about the industry and I’m always eager to try something new.
