Community Highlights: Meet Gwen Goodman of Goodman Senior Insurance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Goodman.

Hi Gwen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story really begins with my mother. As we were growing up, she visited the sick and the poor and would pray for them and take them food and clothes or whatever they needed. So I grew up going with her on these visits.
Fast foward, around 2005, I started working with a durable medical equipment company. My market was the senior population; Medicare and Medicaid patients. It was an education into what many seniors were experiencing and how they were living. Many had no family available to help with everyday challenges. I ran into people who had lost their birth certificate or ID card and had no idea how to replace them, maybe were in a wheelchair and needed a ramp to get into their home, needed access to more food, help making doctors appointments, needed to renew their snap benefits and didn’t know how, etc. etc. I couldn’t help but get involved. I would try to help connect them to whatever help they needed or if I couldn’t help them, I would find someone who could.

Meanwhile, I transitioned into the field of Medicare Insurance; so still involved with the senior market. Over the years, I have seen many more areas of need; homelessness, no furniture, lack of transportation to get to doctor’s appointments, dire need for dental care and many more needs too great to cover here. I have learned more each year about where to find resources and have recruited volunteers to help out with many areas of need; making phone calls, helping with transportation or whatever is needed.

I have not formed an actual formal nonprofit at this time but it’s definitely something I am considering. The needs are overwhelming and I often wish I had a bigger platform to let more people know about just how big the need is and figure out ways to provide more resources and more answers to prevent some of the situations many seniors find themselves in.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been easy trying to figure out how to access some of the resources people need. Sometimes I know the resource is there but knowing how to find the right one and check all the boxes can be a challenge. Going through so many situations has helped educate me and I’m always learning something new about how to help more people and help connect them to the right resources.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Goodman Senior Insurance?
I help Medicare beneficiaries choose the right plan for them. I represent all the major carriers so I am able to provide a broad array of choices for my clients.

I pride myself in always in doing what’s right for my client. The whole Medicare experience can be overwhelming, especially when one first transitions into it. I enjoy holdng my clients’ hands and walking them through the process. Hopefully I can take a lot of the mystery out of it and break things down into understandable concepts. At the end of the process, my goal is to make them feel very comfortable about making a decision and once they make it, feel very satisfied with the decision they’ve made.

How do you think about happiness?
I love this quote from Simon Sinek,
“We have the luxury of looking after ourselves.
We have the honor of looking after each other.”

When i can help look after others and see others doing the same, that makes me very happy. I have to go back to my mother. She always told us if we ever felt down, go do something for someone and it will make you feel better. It works!
