Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Skelly.
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in beauty as a hairstylist and makeup artist, which taught me how powerful transformation can be. From there I expanded into wardrobe styling, photography, set design, creative direction, and eventually live performance. Over time, I realized I wasn’t just interested in making people look beautiful, I wanted to create experiences that transported them into another world.
That led me to build my own creative practice, where I design immersive characters, costumes, and environments for corporate events, festivals, luxury experiences, and artistic productions. Whether I’m creating a towering whimsical tree, or a futuristic aerial character, every design starts with a story. I think about the emotion I want people to feel and then build the visual language around that.
A lot of my work blends nature, mythology, fantasy, and technology. I’m fascinated by archetypes and the way art can invite people to reconnect with wonder, curiosity, and even parts of themselves they may have forgotten.
Looking back, every chapter, from beauty to styling to photography to performance, has been preparing me for what I do now. Even as a child I remember playing dress up was one of my favorite things. Today I get to combine all of those disciplines into one career, creating living works of art that help transform ordinary events into unforgettable experiences. I still feel like I’m evolving, and that’s one of the things I love most about this work. Every new project is an opportunity to imagine something that hasn’t existed before.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Like most creative careers, it’s been full of pivots, uncertainty, and a lot of learning through experience.
One of the biggest challenges has been building a business around work that doesn’t always fit into a traditional category. I’m not just a costume designer or a stylist or a creative director…I’m often all of those things at once, and then some. Learning how to communicate the value of multidisciplinary creative work and find clients who understand that has taken time.
Financially, the creative industry also has its ups and downs. There are seasons where you’re incredibly busy and others where you have to trust the process, keep creating, and continue investing in yourself even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. Those moments have taught me resilience and the importance of staying adaptable.
Another challenge has been learning to balance creativity with entrepreneurship. Designing is the fun part, but running a business also means marketing, budgeting, client communication, logistics, and wearing a lot of different hats. I’ve had to grow just as much as a business owner as I have as an artist.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change those challenges. They’ve pushed me to become more resourceful, more intentional, and more confident in my own creative voice. Every obstacle has helped shape the artist and entrepreneur I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create immersive visual experiences through costume design, creative direction, styling, and performance. My work lives at the intersection of fashion, storytelling, and experiential art, with a focus on transforming spaces and creating moments that leave an impact and inspiration with people.
I specialize in designing original characters and wearable art for corporate events, luxury experiences, festivals, and live productions. I love taking an idea from concept to reality, and bringing Art To Life.
One of the things I enjoy most about this work is that it’s deeply collaborative. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredibly talented performers, designers, photographers, fabricators, florists, aerialists, makeup artists, and event professionals. Every collaboration has taught me something new, and I believe the strongest creative work comes from bringing together people with different skills and perspectives to build something none of us could create alone.
What I’m probably best known for is creating characters that feel alive. I don’t just design a costume, I develop the entire visual language around it, considering movement, silhouette, lighting, makeup, props, and the story each character tells. I want guests to feel like they’ve stepped into another world rather than simply seeing someone in a costume.
What I’m most proud of is that my work has become a true reflection of my imagination while remaining rooted in collaboration. Every project pushes me to invent something new, and every client or creative team brings fresh ideas that help elevate the final result. I love creating experiences that feel unique, meaningful, and full of wonder.
I think what sets me apart is that I’m deeply multidisciplinary. I bring together hairstyling, makeup, wardrobe, photography, scenic design, performance, and creative direction into one cohesive vision. Because I understand each of those elements, I can see the bigger picture, communicate across creative disciplines, and help unify a team around a shared vision.
At the heart of everything I create is a simple goal: to spark wonder. Whether someone encounters one of my characters at a corporate gala, luxury event, or immersive festival, I want them to pause, smile, become curious, and feel like they’ve stepped into a world where imagination is possible.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think we’re entering an exciting era where people are craving experiences more than ever. As technology continues to evolve and so much of our lives happens through screens, I believe thoughtfully designed, real-world experiences will become even more valuable. People want moments that make them feel something, moments they can step into rather than simply observe.
I see immersive entertainment continuing to grow across corporate events, hospitality, festivals, museums, branded experiences, and public art. Clients are looking for more than beautiful decor or performers; they want environments that tell a story, spark curiosity, and create meaningful connections between people.
I also think collaboration will become increasingly important. The most memorable experiences are rarely created by one person; they’re the result of artists, designers, performers, technologists, fabricators, and storytellers bringing their unique talents together. I believe the future belongs to multidisciplinary teams that blur the lines between art, entertainment, technology, and experience design.
Personally, I hope to continue growing alongside that movement by creating immersive worlds around the globe and collaborating with incredible artists from different disciplines and cultures. My goal is to keep pushing creative boundaries while creating experiences that inspire wonder, invite connection, and remind people what it feels like to be fully present.
