Conversations with Mita C. Bland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mita C. Bland.

Hi Mita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My first commissioned watercolor was through a friend who asked me to paint an interior of a house to be given as a gift. The minute I reached the house in CT I had that “aha”moment . I enjoyed painting the room, the light, the shapes, the shadows, that I decided that the interior was a subject worth studying.
I looked for courses but at the time found very little material of interest. I studied perspective by looking at other painters of interiors. , I took a rather uninspiring course at Parsons and realized I had to figure it all out on my own.
Through my brother who at the time had a tromp l’oeil gallery in NY I was introduced to some lovely people at Brunschwig & Fils. They commissioned me to paint 12 renderings showing their upcoming collection of wallpapers, fabrics and trims. From then on I have painted for them for 30 odd years. I now paint many interiors , mostly commissioned.
I ve been published in several books
Sister Parish Design: on decorating 2009
Veere Grenney s A Point of View 2018 Rizzoli
David Netto, the first monograph Vendome 2023
Cathy Kincaid, Memorable Rooms Rizzoli Sept 2026
The Colony Club , a private publication NY Sept 2026
Other
13 paintings showing the project for CIPRIANI s Maritime hotel and restaurants/Clubs 2020
NY School of Interior Design The Persistence of Drawing: an exhibition featuring architects designers and renderers 2024
Ralph Lauren their Christmas design and logo…. In the works!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I could not find a course that offered the subject I was keen to pursue, namely the rendered interior painted in watercolor..
I struggled on my own but also found inspiring work in my search namely
Mark Hampton
Van day Truex
Alexander Creswell
Hugh Buchanan
Albert Hadley
Serabriakoff
John Hulse
Amongst a few
My favorite are tonal wash paintings. They heighten the drama….

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for painting watercolor portraits of rooms, mainly interiors for private clients as well as a few NY Clubs , restaurants and Hotels..
As mentioned I ve painted interiors for two books in 2025 and am working on two hotel projects at the moment , one in NY the other in Miami.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To perservere. To be known for doing one subject rather than many.
