Conversations with Morgan Corbett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Corbett.

Morgan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a photographer for over a decade and capturing such meaningful, important moments is the greatest honor and I’m incredibly grateful God gave me this gift. I have always loved art and have been creating in some form my whole life! In college I pursued a B.F.A. in art education and was a high school art teacher before pursuing photography full time. I started doing photography on the weekends a few years into my teaching career and discovered how much joy I found in photographing the light and stories in all of the people I’ve had the opportunity to photograph! I’ve captured some beautiful places, incredible people, and had some unique experiences. I photographed a little bit of everything including weddings for the first 10 years of this business. Recently, I have pivoted away from weddings to focus more on my other offerings and preserve more weekend time with my family. I’ve been blown away by all the ways God has blessed my business and I’m not sure the younger me would have ever guessed this journey my career would take! When I’m not behind the camera, you can find me traveling, making art with my kids, volunteering in my community and kids’ school by bringing some fun event visions to life, or tackling a fun home decorating project!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Early on, I took every opportunity I could find to grow my craft. I had only taken one photo class during college. Figuring out how to run my own business and also continuing to grow in a field where there’s always more to learn has definitely been full of changes and learning along the way! But, if you find a path with no obstacles it probably doesn’t lead anywhere, right? During my first year teaching, I developed more of an interest in photography and slowly started asking more people to let me practice with them! I had some colleagues warn me about how tough it was starting a photography business at that time and that I probably shouldn’t stop teaching anytime soon. It seemed like everyone was doing it and it was hard to set yourself a part in the industry. I second shot several weddings with a friend, and that first year I even offered free newborn sessions if the family booked me for more photos. I had some wonderful first family clients and friends that trusted me with capturing such important seasons in their life and then they told everyone they knew! It wasn’t easy to come home and do this other business on my nights and weekends, but I really did love it and felt confident this was the path the Lord was leading me on. We were expecting our first child and I began getting lots of opportunities that I couldn’t take on because of my teaching position, so I took the leap and went full time with my photography business in May of 2015 and we welcomed our first child that December. Over the years, I’ve had to make several pivots through different seasons of work and life and still make decisions daily to help better manage it all! Juggling this business and being a mom has definitely continued to be the biggest challenge but also the biggest blessing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love photographing families in every season of life! My style is bright, timeless and fun. I offer on location sessions and also at-home family and newborn sessions. Pop Portraits are fun personality portraits I offer and I also love helping small businesses with headshots and branding photos. I believe it’s my job to make you feel at ease in front of the camera so that your photos are full of genuine smiles and laughter. My goal at every session is to capture photos that reflect your life and family and tell your story!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I truly enjoy getting to know and photographing people! I hope you and your kids walk away loving your experience and our time together. My kids and husband don’t love taking photos, and actually I realize that’s how most people feel. It can be tough being on the other side of the camera, but I guide your family every step of the way so that we capture meaningful photos to document your family in this season! From the initial inquiry, I’ll send you a session specific guide on what to expect and how to prepare. My approach to photography is a little different that just saying “cheese”. I prefer to give you prompts and directions that will create moments and photos rather than just assembling the perfect pose. I usually start each family session with the more classic, looking at the photographer shots, and then the remainder of the session is more candid and full of movement. I love to let the kids lead! Don’t stress about how your children will behave, the best sessions are when mom and dad just play with and love on their kids. My biggest takeaway from photographing families all these years is that nothing will go as planned, so just roll with it. The most beautiful and authentic photos of your family come from that chaos!
