Daily Inspiration: Meet Cocoa Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cocoa Brown.

Hi Cocoa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I literally got started because a friend of mine saw something in me before I did. This friend of mine from college knew someone who owned a comedy club and he for some reason thought I would be a great Stand Up Comic so he told the owner about me and the owner was having a barbecue and my friend took me. I was just being me but by the end of the night. I was invited to the open Mic night and being a theater kid and not being afraid of a stage or an audience I took on the challenge. Let’s just say it was a very interesting night of me trying to be a comedian, but I accidentally broke the audience because I got real and told them I didn’t need to tell jokes I worked for the circus and technically I did because at the time I worked for corporate Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey, but I ended up meeting my mentor Darcell “the Fat doctor” Blagmon that night who saw something in me as well and took me under his wing. This man mentored Martin Lawrence, Tommy Davidson, Donnell Rawlings and pretty much any Comic that came out of the nations capital and he took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew and the rest has been history!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh no, it is like the old saying “Life hasn’t been no crystal stair” pretty much describes my career. There have been extreme, highs and extreme lows. I think one of the biggest struggles was the jealousy and the hate that I encountered once I found my voice, and I really tapped into my funny and who and what I thought would be supportive were not because I guess I was never supposed to transcend them, and there was a lot of betrayal during that time of people that I trusted and thought were my friends and I had to learn the hard way that friends in this business are unicorns. You could have plenty of colleagues and comrades but friend yeah can’t throw that word around too lightly. If you have them consider yourself extremely blessed because loyalty isn’t always loyal.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ll make this real easy and just attach my bio 😂

What matters most to you? Why?
At this moment right now in my life being a good mother to my 14 year-old I’m in the final frontier here before I send him off to college and it’s just been me and him since he was seven months old so making sure these last few years before I’m an empty nest really matter is probably the most important to me. Second to that is finding the next great passion of mine. I’ve given 30 years of my life to this business, as an Actress & Comedian, been on the road A LOT, seen a many of airplanes, hotels stages and sets. I’ve been blessed to see the world thanks to this sense of humor but there’s something else out there for me and I’m looking forward to discovering that new passion. Recently, I’ve been directing and producing and writing a micro drama, and I’ve discovered that I truly love being on the other side of the camera as well, so just really digging into that one and see if that might be the next chapter of my life.
