Exploring Life & Business with Jasmine Skeete of Jae Skeete’s Vegan Sweets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Skeete.

Hi Jasmine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am wife, mother, Jesus follower, artist, graphic designer, and former art educator who felt the call from God to start homeschooling our 4 children. Within the first few months, I started my baking business after making a cookie cake my daughter’s 1st birthday. People kept saying I should sell baked goods because they taste great and you can’t tell it’s vegan. It made perfect sense to me because I wanted something I could do while they played or completely their work and I’ve always loved to cook and bake for my family.

Being that we’re vegan (except for my husband, he’s only vegan at home lol), I got used to making desserts for birthdays and holidays because the vegan options were limited. At one point, I was also making gluten free desserts for our two sons who had issues with ezcema. While being home, I’ve had the time to practice and learn more about baking which truly took my desserts to a new level. They don’t only taste good but they look good as well!

I never thought I’d be a stay-at-home-mom who homeschools and disciples her children while running her own business. God has truly guided me through his plan for my life. In this season, I’m enjoyed slow mornings, precious time with our children, learning new piping techniques, and trying new cookie flavors.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge is managing my time with 4 children. I often get up super early so that I can get my baking done before they wake up. That way I can record content and take photos without noise or distractions. There have been quite a few times I’ve had cookies in the oven and I forget to set the time because they came down stairs, talking and asking a million questions. I’ve learned my lesson lol.

As orders increase, I’ve had to adjust my timeline for the week. I will measure dry ingredients one day, bake the next day, then decorate cakes the day of order pick up. I’ve learned from other bakers on Instagram to not try and do everything in one day.

We’ve been impressed with Jae Skeete’s Vegan Sweets, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a cottage food baker meaning I make and sell food from my home. I specialize in vegan and dye-free desserts that you can feel good about giving to your family. I care about what goes in my body so I give the same care to the desserts I make for others. Unbleached flour, dairy-free chocolate, and pure cane sugar are some of the ingredients that set my baked goods apart. I’m known for amazingly soft and chewy cookies, moist cakes and cupcakes, and the “I can’t believe this is vegan” experience.

How do you define success?
Success is simply saying yes to whatever God is asking you to do. God can do way more with our yes than we can do with our own efforts. There are things I used to desire as an educator like wining “Teacher of the Year” or becoming a professor at a college but now my definition of success for my life has changed because those things don’t matter any more. Success for my business is whatever God wants to do with it. As long as God gets the glory, that’s success for me.
