Today we’d like to introduce you to Stehfaní Thomas.

Hi Stehfaní, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started at Fort Valley State University as a writing and reading tutor in the WINLab under the leadership of Dorothy Hardman and Dr. Strange. What started as a work-study position became a side hustle. I found myself helping students strengthen their writing, organize their thoughts, and gain confidence in their academic work.

As graduation approached, I was trying to figure out what came next. While reviewing my résumé, Mrs. Hardman challenged the way I saw myself. She told me I wasn’t “just a tutor”—I was a consultant. That simple shift in perspective changed the trajectory of my career. Around the same time, my father said something that has stayed with me ever since: “Joy doesn’t pay bills.” Since then, I’ve been on a journey to discover how to do work that brings me joy while also creating a sustainable career.

In 2016, God led me into public education, even though it wasn’t the path I initially imagined. My original goal was to become a college professor, and I’ve been blessed to accomplish that. I said I would never teach middle school. Today, I’m certified in Middle Grades English Language Arts and Reading, and I absolutely love working with middle school students. God has a way of placing us exactly where we’re needed.

I eventually stepped away from public education because I recognized a larger need. I wanted the freedom to address literacy in ways that the traditional system often couldn’t. That vision recently led to the launch of Read for Cheese, a literacy initiative designed to combat summer learning loss while making reading engaging and accessible for students.

Looking back, what once seemed like unrelated experiences now fit together perfectly. None of it would have been possible without God. Even when the journey didn’t make sense to other people—or sometimes even to me—He was faithfully directing every step. Now, I can see how every season has come together to support the mission He placed on my life: helping people transform through literacy, communication, and education.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road.

Without question, my greatest challenges have been personal rather than professional. Becoming a mother changed my life in ways I could never have anticipated. My children are my greatest blessings, and I wouldn’t change having them for anything. At the same time, having children outside of marriage created challenges that affected every area of my life. Each season of motherhood, for me, required years of recovery—mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially—before I could fully regain my footing.

Many of the opportunities people take for granted in building a career, such as networking, traveling, attending conferences, or saying yes to last-minute opportunities, often weren’t available to me. Entrepreneurship and leadership require flexibility, and there were many times when my responsibilities as a mother had to come first. That meant making sacrifices that weren’t always visible to others.

My experiences have taught me that choosing the right partner is one of the most significant decisions a person can make. I learned that lesson the hard way, and it has shaped how I approach relationships today.

Another challenge has been building a vision that isn’t always understood. Support often follows familiarity. People naturally invest in what they understand, and because much of my work has involved creating new literacy initiatives and entrepreneurial ventures, finding the right support system has taken time.

Despite those challenges, I don’t see my story through the lens of hardship. I see it through the lens of God’s faithfulness. Every obstacle has strengthened my resilience, deepened my faith, and reinforced my commitment to building a legacy that my children can be proud of. If anything, the difficulties have made the victories even more meaningful.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When I started Syntax Solutions L.C., I wanted to create meaningful work for college students and seniors because I worked in fast food and hated it. I’m still building toward that vision; it remains at the heart of why I started my company.

So, today, I may say “I” because I’m the face of the business, but my goal is to one day say “we.” I envision Syntax Solutions L.C. becoming a hub where editors, ghostwriters, instructional designers, literacy specialists, graphic designers, marketers, and project managers collaborate to help people bring their ideas to life.

But, for now, I provide editing, ghostwriting, publishing support, curriculum development, literacy consulting, professional development, and strategic communications. Whether I am helping an author publish their first book, developing literacy programs for students, or creating training materials for an organization, my goal is always the same: transform ideas into impact.

What sets me apart is that I don’t simply correct grammar or produce polished documents—I solve communication problems. My background spans K–12 education, higher education, literacy, leadership, and publishing, allowing me to bridge worlds that often operate separately. I understand the classroom, the boardroom, and the publishing industry, so I can help clients communicate effectively with the audiences they serve.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that my work extends beyond individual success.

Above all, I want people to know that Syntax Solutions L.C. is more than a business—it’s a mission. I believe literacy is the foundation of transformation, communication is the bridge that makes transformation possible, and every person has a story, message, or vision worth sharing with the world.

What’s next?
I’m excited about what’s ahead because I feel like everything I’ve done so far has been preparing me for this next season.

One of the biggest changes on the horizon is relocating to the DMV area. While I’ve been blessed to serve my hometown, I never wanted to become a regional educator or writer. I believe every community has something to teach us, and I want to broaden my perspective by learning from students, families, educators, and leaders in a different part of the country.

Professionally, I’m excited to continue growing Syntax Solutions L.C. from a solo business into a collaborative organization. My vision has always been bigger than me. I look forward to the day when I can say “we” instead of “I.”

I’m also looking forward to expanding Read for Cheese. My hope is to partner with schools, churches, and community organizations to improve literacy outcomes while making reading engaging and accessible for students. Ultimately, I want to continue helping more authors tell their stories, more educators strengthen literacy, and more organizations communicate with purpose.

At the end of the day, I aim to build something that outlives me—an organization that creates opportunities, transforms lives through literacy, and leaves every community better than it found it. I believe every new city, classroom, and relationship is preparing me to do exactly that.
