Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayanna Johnson.
Hi Tayanna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my Postpartum Doula journey in October 2020 and trained with the National Black Doulas Association in Atlanta,GA. As most of us, I am on the journey of exploring what I’m passionate about and my purpose(s), here on Earth. One of my best friends had a male Doula for her birth, I was intrigued and thought that’s an amazing position to hold a certain type of space for an individual and family. I didn’t act on it immediately, but it kept coming up after that… on social media, articles, people I’d encounter, so I decided to look into it! I discovered there were different types of Doulas, besides a birthing Doula that I knew of. I told myself to just try it, do the research, find a company to certify with and the rest is herstory.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been interestingly amazing, a marathon, not a sprint. When I decided how I wanted to market myself and deliver information in hopes of sharing information, attracting families or individuals who could us my assistance, I was sprinting. That is not what you want to do with anything, so I try to be more intentional when posting on social media and having discussions. Some way, discussing postpartum information has come up in more of my conversations, what I offer and my role as a postpartum Doula. I love the opportunity to inform and educate, as well as being educated and informed. Everyone doesn’t understands how beneficial a Doula can be during and after their birthing experience. I am still working on putting myself out there to work with families and other birth workers. Stay grounded and know whose for you is for you, but keep putting in the work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The BEAUTYful Xperience focuses on beauty and postpartum services. I am a full-time hairstylist and part-time Postpartum Doula in Atlanta. In my professional beauty background, I focus on what I’ve created to be the 4H system: haircare, haircuts, hair extensions and hair color; and on the postpartum side, I focus on the mother’s needs, communication team-building and spouse informed support. I am different in my fields because I look to merge the two professional areas of my life, I am a hairstyling Doula (lol) and I believe that can truly set me aside from others. I am proud that my brand can represent anyone because I want people to know they’re BEAUTYful in every way and others remember them through the Xperience they’d left others within life. I want people to know that we’ll have a good time, and I love learning from future guest and postpartum families.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very laid back, the one my friend’s parents trusted, had fun times, serious for no reason sometimes (and still can be) and I enjoyed hanging out with friends. Now, enjoying family and the moments we get together is so much more important as you get older. I really enjoyed school. I like to joke and tell people I was a professional student because I enjoyed being in the school environment- I think I enjoyed it so much because I was able to meet new people, now I get to do that with my hair guest and postpartum families.
