Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Azubuike Kathrein.
Hi Victoria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, I am Victoria Azubuike Kathrein, and my story starts way back on a council estate in London. My childhood and my upbringing have literally played a huge part in who I am today. I am the oldest daughter in my family, and I grew up in a super low income household. I remember some days when I would open the fridge and there was literally nothing inside. But one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted so much more.
Despite the fact that I have severe dyslexia and did not have a lot growing up, I ended up going to Warwick University, one of the best universities (colleges) in the UK. I then started my career in advertising/PR, but I reached a point where I had built my first six figure business in recruitment (after working in recruitment) and I just did not want to continue doing both. I had hosted events for thousands of women in the UK and had been featured in the likes of BBC, Sunday Times, Daily Mail and other publications in the UK.
I just reached a point that I think so many high achieving women reach in the U.K., where I was like, this is not really where I want to be. I knew from 2020, that I had to leave London. This is not where I can grow to my next level. So I decided to quit my job, build my business, invest everything into it and grow my brand.
Then I decided to use all the profits from my business to risk it all and explore somewhere new, the United States of America. Over five trips in 2 years. I did not know anybody here in Atlanta. I literally booked a flight and went away for three weeks. I visited Orlando, Houston, Atlanta and New York. While I was in New York, I hosted an event for women and realised that this was where I wanted the next chapter of my life to be.
From there, I started hosting events for women in Atlanta. My first event sold out with 100 women, and then I hosted four more of my She Who Elevates events during the summer and at the end of the year. They were all about bringing together women who wanted to dream big, network and creating an opportunity for them to connect with like minded women.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. I feel like resilience should be my middle name. I have literally had to go through so many hurdles.
First, I came from a low income background. Secondly, I found out at university that I had severe dyslexia. That meant I was somebody who had to put so much effort in. I would work so hard in school, and I am talking about from a very young age. Even when I was doing my GCSEs in Middle School almost, which are major exams that we take in the UK, I would work most nights to make sure that I would be okay. I ended up doing really well and getting six As and three Bs.
From a young age, I have never seen as ‘gifted’. I have always known that I need to work hard and that, even if I do not get the best grades, eventually I can get where I want to go. That resilience has pulled me through every single chapter of my life, all the way to where I am now, school, my first business being married and having relocated to the USA.
Along the way, I had to figure out how to follow this burning desire I had to be in Atlanta. On my first trip here almost three years ago, I came by myself. I knew nobody and had no family here. I just decided to book a flight, travel for three weeks, visit four different states and figure things out for myself.
I am talking about going from someone who had made six figures in the UK to starting completely over on these trips. I did not even know what the grocery stores were in the USA or what your money looked like. Thank God for my Amex Card. Now I have found my husband, the love of my life, and we’re navigated the whole US immigration system to get my green card here.
It has been a lot to figure out. I remember spending so much of the money I had made from my first six figure business on flights, accommodation and Ubers. Living in London, I lived in the city and did not even drive, so everything was very different. But that is why I feel like God really brought me the most amazing man. He has made the journey so beautiful, and now I have someone lovely to build the next chapter of my life with.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about She Who?
What were you like growing up, personality wise, interest wise and so on?
Well, I am the oldest daughter in a family of five, so if you know anything about oldest daughters, we are literally like the second mum. I definitely was the second mum.
A lot of my childhood was literally spent in the library with my sisters or by myself studying. We did not have a lot, so my sister and I always looked for ways to make money. For around six years straight, from May to October, we would sell cakes outside our projects. We started doing that when we were really young, around eight to twelve years old. People would ask us, why are you doing this? You are so young.
We wanted to show there’s good young people and we’d save all our money to buy ourselves Christmas gifts. From there, I had several different businesses, and now I am building She Who into a huge brand that will inspire millions of women.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Please tell us more about your business or organisation. What should we know? What do you do, what do you specialise in and what are you known for? What sets you apart from others? What are you most proud of as a brand? What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings and services?
My business is called She Who, and essentially, we want to show women that they can literally become the women of their dreams.
We have hosted events in the past, and now one of the biggest parts of our business is our products, namely our planners. Our planners show women that they can get the things they want, and that is all based on my own life. I have literally written down everything I have wanted in every chapter of my life, from the grades I wanted in school, to being between the UK and the USA, finding the love of my life, getting married and living in the USA.
I love showing women that when you write down the vision, you can get what you want.
