Life & Work with DeJané Cade

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeJané Cade.

Hi DeJané, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My grassroots beginning start at the age of 11 years young when my mother introduced me to her childhood pastime technique of Crochet. In the conception of learning the craft, I produced more common items such as; Table dollies/runners, blankets, winter mittens and scarfs.

However, my attraction to crochet grew significantly which transition my skills into making infant booties and matching baby coat sets. As time progressed, I became very curious to see if perhaps I could produce clothing items for myself. I must inform everyone that I come from a very fashionable family. In fact, my older brother (Jamal Stewart) whom have managed several high-end brands have provided me with luxury retail goods since a very tender age. For example, I’m pretty sure I was wearing a Michael Kors backpack in first grade before I could properly understand what or whom labels I was privileged to have in my collection. After doing my research and stumbling upon a circle dress crochet pattern, I began my very first attempts of making full crochet clothing. The birth of where my notoriety stimulates from my brother walking in my room, recording my very first crochet circle dress on my mannequin. I kid you not, I’m literally deep conditioning my hair as I crochet the hem of the skirt and he’s in awe of my work.

What takes place after that recording and upload to Facebook is the birth momentum of what is now my boutique which is ” Angel Love Crochet & Company LLC.” The footage went viral and I knew I had something worth perusing. Now mind you, that was only the beginning. A few years passed and my crochet clothing designs were very simple in nature. What really opened my eyes to more intricate crochet designs stimulate from the group of young women who made the “Don’t Rush” Crochet Challenge during the beginning of the Covid19 pandemic. Seeing my older crochet sisters make beautiful designs rebirth my interest and the rest is crochet history! My business have since grew exponentially. My creative flare in crochet have taken a new height. Currently, I’m well known for my Crochet Mermaid Gowns and which I must say is changing the perception of what crochet clothes are limited too. Now at the age of 15, my goal is to become the luxury crochet household designer and make my mark in the world of fashion.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Honey, to whom much is given, much more is required. The journey to where I am today is not an easy road. One of the most noted barriers that I have face is the nonbelievers of my work due to my age. I can’t claim that I’m the youngest crochet prodigy but at the age of now 15 some individuals still questions my abilities since the very beginning. However, I have used this to fuel my passion to produce more attention-worthy work. Alongside the age factor, I would say that I am in an industry that is saturated with so many other talented crochet designers. But in retrospect, my crochet community have truly supported my doings which gives me a sense of purpose and ownership. Lastly, this pandemic have been an obstacle within itself. It very challenging to make custom clothing for individuals without measuring them personally. However, I have been blessed to be innovative with conducting business virtually through this time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a luxury crochet clothing designer. I specialize in couture crochet garments and gowns. I am best known for my crochet mermaid gowns and possible being one ofthe few teen crochet artist making these lengthy garments. What have define my work is that I take a more classic approach with making my crochet clothing. I aim to make crochet clothes that challenge the idea that crochet have limitations. I also want to dispel the notion that crochet clothing is tactless or always suggesting provocative images. I understand that bralettes are common but that should not be our final destination.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
First giving honor to God who is the supplier of my talent. Next, I must mention the support system of my family. My parents are the biggest motivational influence and definitely my financial aid in running this business. My older brother Jamal Stewart have poured his all into taking my talent to the next level. He have navigated the creative direction of my work as well as cultivated the foundation elements of my brand. Last but certainly not least, my community of supporters. From my patrons, subscribers, followers, and even secret admirers I am forever indebted of the love they have given to me.
