Life & Work with Rickie Tang of Other

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rickie Tang.

Hi Rickie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Fashion fascinates me because it can communicate without speaking.

I studied Fashion Design at SCAD in Atlanta, where I developed my perspective as a designer and began shaping the foundation of RICKIETANG. The brand is built around contrast: raw and refined, strength and vulnerability, destruction and beauty. I use clothing to explore identity, emotion, and the parts of ourselves we do not always reveal.

My newest collection, Innermost, is the clearest expression of that vision so far. It explores the tension between how we present ourselves to the world and what exists underneath. Through distressed textures, reconstructed pieces, and contrasting silhouettes, the collection reflects the complexity of confronting what lies beneath the surface.

As RICKIETANG continues to evolve, the goal remains the same: to create clothing with a strong point of view that makes people feel seen, understood, and connected without needing to say a word.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the creative side of the brand with everything else it takes to keep it moving. As an independent designer, you quickly realize you are also the marketer, producer, accountant, and occasionally the unpaid intern.

It can be overwhelming, but learning each part of the process has made me more resourceful and helped shape RICKIETANG into a stronger, more intentional brand.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating contemporary fashion that balances concept with craftsmanship. I enjoy pushing familiar garments in unexpected directions through reconstruction, distressing, embroidery, and thoughtful material choices. My process is hands-on from start to finish, and I love seeing an idea evolve from an initial sketch into a finished collection.

What sets my work apart is the intention behind every decision. I believe great design isn’t just about making something look beautiful—it should make people feel something. Every detail has a purpose, and I’m most proud when someone connects with the story behind the garment just as much as the garment itself.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by the connection people have with my work. When someone sees themselves in a piece and uses it to express who they are, that feels more meaningful to me than any traditional measure of success.
