Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Martin.
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Let’s start with my story. I was a single mom for 12 years before I met the love of my life, Jason. We’ve now been married for three years and have a big, blended family. I have three children, ages 17–24, and Jason has three children, ages 20–26, along with a daughter-in-law and two precious grandbabies!
I’m also a breast cancer survivor, which was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever endured. Going through that experience changed my perspective on life. It taught me empathy for others, gratitude for the little things, and, most importantly, a desire to live life to the fullest. I’ve been cancer-free since 2018, and I don’t take a single day for granted.
When Jason and I got married in 2023, we decided to take a leap of faith and open a golf cart dealership in Hoschton, Georgia, called Putters Golf Carts. What started as a new adventure has grown into a successful family-owned business right in the heart of downtown. It has been incredibly rewarding to build something together and become part of the community we call home.
In March 2025, we took another big step and moved to downtown Hoschton, just across the street from our business. That move opened the door to an opportunity I never expected: joining the Downtown Development Authority as Chairman of this all-volunteer board.
To be honest, I didn’t know much about the DDA when I joined, and I had never been immersed in downtown development or city government. But I jumped in headfirst, and discovered something I truly love.
Today, I have the opportunity to be a leader within our city while helping promote economic growth and create a downtown that people are proud to call their own. Through beautification projects, signage improvements, community events, and new initiatives, we’re working to make a positive and lasting impact on downtown Hoschton.
My passion comes from seeing the fruits of our labor. There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching an idea turn into a project, a project turn into an experience, and ultimately seeing those efforts bring people together and make our community a better place. I never expected this to be the path I would take, but I’m incredibly grateful that it found me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! I don’t think anyone’s road is ever completely smooth, and mine certainly hasn’t been.
Being a single mom for 12 years came with its own challenges. Raising three children while working (sometimes 3 jobs), managing a household, and trying to build a life for our family taught me resilience and how to keep moving forward even when things felt overwhelming. I was on welfare and food stamps for much of that time before I was able to get off all government assistance, and I’m very proud of that.
Then came my breast cancer diagnosis in 2018. That was, without a doubt, one of the hardest seasons of my life. It changed me in ways I never expected and gave me a completely different perspective on what really matters. It really took about 2 full years to get back to normal, and since then I have helped and supported and encouraged many women who have faced the same breast cancer diagnosis, surgeries and treatments.
When I stepped into a leadership role with the DDA, it was something I knew very little about. I’ve had to learn quickly, navigate difficult situations, work with different personalities and perspectives, and sometimes make decisions knowing that not everyone will agree with them. That has probably been one of the biggest lessons for me: leadership isn’t about making everyone happy. It’s about doing what you believe is right for the community and being willing to stand behind it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Putters Golf Carts is a family-owned and operated golf cart dealership in the heart of downtown Hoschton. We specialize in new and used golf carts and street-legal LSVs, but we’re really known for so much more than what we sell.
Most of our customers aren’t golfers, they’re looking for a fun, convenient way to get around their neighborhoods, downtown, restaurants, and local events, living the “golf cart life”. We take pride in helping people find the right cart for how they actually live and use it.
What sets us apart is that we’re truly a family business. Jason, my son, and I are all involved, and our customers get to know us personally. We’re also very focused on being transparent and making the buying process simple.
What I’m most proud of is what we’ve built from the ground up. Putters has become a successful local business, but more importantly, it has allowed us to become part of the community. We love seeing our customers around town in their Putters carts, and knowing that something we built together has become a part of everyday life in Hoschton.
What does success mean to you?
I think success is much less about what you have and much more about who you have.
Do your kids call you just to talk? Do they want to spend time with you? Do you have a relationship with them that you’re proud of? Do you genuinely enjoy coming home to your spouse and working alongside them? Do you make time for your family and find joy in being together?
For me, those things are success.
Of course, I’m proud of what we’ve built with Putters and the work I’m doing in our community, but none of that means much if you don’t have people to share it with. At the end of the day, I want to know that I’ve built a life I love, surrounded by people I love, and that I’ve been present enough to actually enjoy it.
