Meet Maurice Myers of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Myers.

Hi Maurice , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Maurice Myers, a writer, educator, and author from the Sedgwick Projects in the Bronx. Writing introduced me to some of my closest friends, opened doors I never expected, and became a way of life.

I’m the author of the Finders Keepers trilogy and the Experiment poetry series, with work that explores Black life, family, love, mental health, masculinity, spirituality, and personal growth. My professional journey has taken me from college-prep site director to classroom teacher, always with a focus on community and helping people find their voice.

Today, I’m also the co-founder of Eyeconic Enterprises and Eyeconic Enterprises Publishing, our publishing company dedicated to helping independent authors bring their stories to life. With six books published and another arriving November 30, I’m continuing to grow, create, and become the best version of myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been challenges all through the journey. A big one has been my own ignorance. I’ve suffered the most by making decisions without all the information because either it wasn’t available or I wasn’t aware of how to get it. As a black man the idea that I’m an author to others sometimes always has an asterisk next to it. They expect urban fiction or street books that they don’t consider true literature. While that’s not what I write personally it’s been challenging to explain we exists in all forms and all forms of art deserves to be acknowledged for what it is.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an author, poet, spoken-word artist, speaker, mentor, video editor, and co-founder of Eyeconic Enterprises. I’ve been writing for more than two decades and have released six books in the last six years, including the Finders Keepers trilogy and The Experiment poetry series.

I’m known for using my work to motivate and encourage others. Through my TikTok page, @theauthormauricemyers, I mentor writers, coach independent authors, help format books, and share what I’ve learned from my own publishing journey.

Writing has allowed me to travel, inspire people, build community, have book signings, and live out dreams that started in the Sedgwick Projects of the Bronx. Some of my proudest moments have been watching my parents and little brother see me sell and sign my own books.

My fantasy stories are built to entertain while still teaching something, and my poetry takes readers directly through my thoughts, experiences, humor, struggles, and growth.

What sets me apart is simple, I’m committed to being the best Maurice Myers who has ever worn this skin and existed in this time period. To me, that means knowing my worth and acting on it.

I can perform spoken word, mentor an author, host a show, sit in a conference room, or have the kind of conversation that helps somebody see themselves differently. No matter what space I’m in, the goal is the same: create, connect, motivate, and leave people better than I found them.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was quiet right up until I wasn’t. Once I realized I could make people laugh, I never really shut up. One of my favorite movies as a kid was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Roger had a line that always stuck with me: “A laugh can be a very powerful thing. Sometimes in life, it’s the only weapon we have.” Coming from the Bronx, some days you needed a weapon, and mine became laughter. I was always sensitive to words, so I learned to keep my own ready for whatever situation came my way. I loved music, sitcoms, parties, and being around people who knew how to have a good time. I became the friend who was always there for a laugh, a memory, or a story worth retelling. Those experiences eventually led me to poetry. It gave me a place to put everything I was feeling, the humor, the frustration, the love, the confusion, and the lessons. What started as a way to express myself became the foundation for the writer and performer I am today.
