Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyree McCall.
Hi Tyree, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First off, none of this would have been possible without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Creativity and innovation has always been a gift for me since I was young. Growing up, my mom and stepdad provided all of our needs but I always had an eye for a lot of cool, creative things. This was the beginning of my self-taught, freelance graphic designer career!
How it started – 2009, age 15, My brother Adrien aka Last. Blo began his music career and started from the ground up. We would host several events, throw parties and record artists in his studio. At the time, we knew graphic designers but as we grew, God began to show us vision. With “fire and brimstone” we call it, my brother begin to challenge me to start doing his album covers, mixtapes, party flyers, etc. It was from there, I saw my future. Thank you, my brother, Love you forever Champ!
How I got here – 2012, following my Senior year in high school, I didn’t know that my hobby could ever lead me here. People were noticing and word started spreading that I could do graphics. I was grateful people chose me to help bring their vision to life so I would never turn anything down. At the time I was making graphics anywhere from 0 to $30 max. That was definitely not going to cut it. Lol!!
2013 I pursued a career in the Nuclear Construction & Safety industry In Waynesboro, GA at Plant Vogtle. Graphics was still my passion but it became secondary to becoming a father and providing for my family. In 2014 I had my son and life changed for me. By 2016 my daughter was born and I needed a game plan.
As time went by, I continued to push up the ladder in the construction industry to become a Nuclear Welder. Graduating from welding school and pursuing my career really pushed me and created a determination in me like no other. It also provided a substantial amount of income to allow me to pour into my dream.
By this time graphics was so secondary, I literally would just do it for fun because I didn’t need the money more than I was just grateful of people asking me to help them. For that, I would design any and everything concerning designs even if I hated the project. Funny thing is I never went to school or had a computer at the time. Everything was done from my phone and it literally felt like playing a video game from home or at work in the break room. You talking about fun, whew.
From persistently working on my craft, social media was flooded with my work. Local businesses, churches and even schools begin to fall in love with my work. My skill set and knowledge towards graphics grew larger and larger.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest challenges in life was pursuing a graphic design career full-time. There was a huge need of branding and marketing in my community and I knew I was charged to that assignment by God. Lives were changing and people that wanted to give up their business literally told me if it had not been for my work, they would have gave up!
2020, I took a leap of faith and walked away from my career as a welder. Grossing over six figures a year, in the middle of a pandemic and raising a family at the time I did not understand it but I knew I had a worthy ideal. It was at this time I invested in my business, purchasing a laptop and numerous other investments including Adobe software and taking one on one photoshop courses. This sacrifice was one of the hardest trials of my life. I lost family, friends and loved ones. Many people called me crazy and others even told me there is no success in graphic design.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
