Meet Krystal Banner of Kaleidadope

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Banner.

Krystal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about art but never planned on making it a career. I started my career in engineering while still painting and creating as a hobby on the side. In 2017 I founded Kaleidadope as a creative outlet for myself, focusing on greeting cards that were more diverse and relevant. Although my engineering career was fulfilling, I realized I wasn’t as excited about it as I was about art. After many life changes, I decided to take a leap to pursue my passion for Kaleidadope full-time. I noticed diversity was severely lacking in the art (specifically images and the culture of Black people) not only with greeting cards but in products depicting positivity and spirituality. This led to expanding from greeting cards to positive affirmations, inspirational quotes, tarot and more. Art is powerful and it’s my goal to use it to be more inclusive and inspire others.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but I believe anything worth having will involve some challenges. Making the decision to leave my successful career and take a chance on myself was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. I knew if I stayed, I would be miserable, so I had to leave even though I didn’t know where that would lead me. Walking into the unknown was difficult since I did not have the safety of my comfort zone. I’ve constantly battled self-doubt and uncertainty along the way, but what has kept me moving forward is my passion, the confidence I have in myself and my talent. I continued to create even when sales were low and no one knew anything of Kaleidadope. I’ve adopted a practice of meditation, which has helped me clear mental chatter and remain grounded. I believe ups and downs are a part of life – the struggles and challenges have taught me about my resilience, strength and capabilities.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kaleidadope – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Kaleidadope specializes in stationery, self-published decks, illustration and design inspired by color and culture. I’m most proud of how my passion for art, design and self-discovery has resonated with others through authenticity. I have stayed true to my own journey and what inspires me so to see people supporting and aligning with what I do is super humbling. I believe this is part of what sets me apart. I pour my energy into everything I create and approach design in non-traditional ways. With Kaleidadope I am able to mix art, pop culture, humor, spirituality and wellness, which are all aspects of myself and my interest.
