Meet Susan King of PlateSculpt in West Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan King.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Susan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2011, my husband, Scott, brought Power Plates into his gym to add state of the arts equipment to his circuit workouts. When I experienced the Plate of the first time, my body fell in love. The vibrations made the workout twice as intense, and the circulation felt amazing as it relieved pain from years of running, bootcamps, and all other forms of exercise. Having had an ear full about my new passion, Scott suggested I get certified and begin personally training with the Power Plate®. Being a bit of a fitness nerd, I was giddy to discover that a wide variety of exercises could be performed on the Plate in far less time without sacrificing results. My creative outlet became designing high intensity, sweat inducing, full body workouts that changed daily. Our quick, intense half-hour workout began with neighbors, then grew by word of mouth and gradually shifted from personal training to small group classes.

I found I had two client types. About half came to me because they had very full lives and the idea of a high intensity, full body workout in under 30 minutes with the full benefits of an hour was very appealing to them. The others came because they were out of shape and figured they could handle a half hour of anything! Of the second half, many of these were discouraged and often felt hopeless. Some of them came to me in tears. Having struggled with emotional eating in the past and having recovered my body after three pregnancies I felt a genuine connection with their pain. What is really cool about Power Plate® workouts is how they promote quick results. As the body responds to the vibrations from the Plate, muscle performance in increased and the results are amplified. This gives clients confidence as they see and feel the changes in their bodies occurring in just a couple of weeks! We became known as the place to get an amazing workout in 27 minutes, but my greatest joy has been seeing the faces of hopeless, tear-stained clients transformed into confident, sweaty smiles as they became sculpted and stronger!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have to be real and admit having a studio inside of my husband’s gym has been a bit of a marital struggle. Though tough the struggles have been the impetus to bring us closer and I am grateful to Scott for helping me discover my passion to encourage women towards self-love, confidence., and a healthy lifestyle.

The biggest challenge is happening right now. We are scaling the business from personal training to a full studio. Although Power Plate® is used by most professional sports teams and widely accepted by elite athletes, it is more like a hidden gem in a crowded fitness market.

That leaves us with the responsibility to get the word out. We recently launched our new brand and are beginning to implement marketing programs including a stronger social media presence. Before now, we have grown by word of mouth only.

As a small business owner, I teach most of the classes and wear multiple hats, I thank God for giving me youthful energy, but I know it is only a matter of time that I can keep my body moving at this rate. We are currently searching for more talented instructors to add more class types and connect with and reach the Millennials.

PlateSculpt – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are Atlanta’s only Power Plate® studio specializing in high intensity, full body workouts in under 30 minutes. We are a friendly studio where everybody feels welcome! I mean it when I say the nicest group of women in Atlanta grace our doors! Our small classes have five spots with encouraging instructors that focus on proper form so our client’s get results! We take pride in helping our clients crush their goals and we love haring them beam with confidence when they tell their story!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
About a year and a half ago, a mom of four children came to me out of shape and in tears. After training her three times a week for about a year and a half, she lost over 30 pounds and gained a ton of confidence! One morning after workout she was encouraging her friends with a huge smile, telling them to “feel this!” as she pointed to her rock-hard abs! I was so proud of how hard she had worked and all she had accomplished! it is very rewarding and humbling to be trusted in a person’s journey back to health and fitness.

It is such a blast delivering a butt-kicking workout to the elite fit, but my greatest joy is being part of a client’s transformation from a hopeless, tear-stained face to a confident, sweaty smile!
