All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others. At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more. We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?
Tiana Young – Natural Hair Blogger
The best business advice I’ve ever received is “no one owes you anything.” As a hair blogger, I cannot maneuver through this field or any field with a sense of entitlement. People do not have to engage with my content, which makes me so grateful and humbled that they do.
Akili Yasmine – “The Expressionist”
The best advice I’ve ever received was “Akili, you need to wake up every morning and decide to choose yourself… whatever that may look like. Choose to be kind to yourself and to meet yourself where you are… over and over and over again.”
Tyra V – Motivational, Social, amen Beauty Vlogger
Always smile no matter the circumstance, situation, or tribulation you are in. Soon, you will realize it was nothing but an opportunity to rise and grow.

Emanuel Comedy – Stand-up comedian
The best advice I received was by an improv comedian in Boston. I spoke briefly to him that I wanted to do comedy but I didn’t think I was very funny. He simply said, “funny is just a positive response.” His response got me to think different and different events landed me on stage as a stand-up comedian.

Kareema Pearsall- Podcast Host of Bawse Up Kween and Blogger
Trusting the path your life is on can be challenging. I’m not sure about you but at times my trials and circumstances felt like punishments. It’s easy to beat yourself up about decisions and paths taken and even more difficult to push through them. We hear people speak about light at the end of the tunnel but sometimes we can’t even see a flicker.
I was told sometime ago, “Every grain of sand we move is a victory.” Instead of feeling defeated in my circumstances, I started embracing them. Nothing happened to me, it was for me. To teach me and mold me for my designed journey and purpose. I needed to embrace my story. Trust that it’s working in my favor.
I created more hurt, pain and disappointment within myself, through my own doing. I had enough! The constant battle within myself had to end. I allowed the obstacles in my path to make me stronger, I felt empowered. Now, with every single grain of sand I move, I’ve decided to celebrate. I’m creating a victory in every win, big or small and that mindset has saved me! Everyday I expect the unexpected, recognizing, and believing favor from our God is raining on my life. Our life’s challenges help us grow. Regardless of the journey, it’s yours, own it.

Dieniz Costa, Sacred Sexuality & Wellness Coach
Best advice I ever received was to listen to myself… little did I know how deep that would go. I have had to learn to connect to my intuition, to listen to the tightening of my body, the inklings of my gut. When I was first told to listen to myself, I though they meant, follow your heart. I now know that the “I” that I have been listening to goes beyond my flesh and bones, it is the I that is one with all. It whispers softly and I listen.
